The Eclectics & The Rockafellas “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” Starring Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiGaprio, Juliette Lewis and Darlene Cates Directed by Lasse Hallstrdm Rated PG-13 Playing at Cannike Cinema III Don’t let the silly title of this film fool you. “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” is not some low-budget, half-hearted comedy filled with weak punch lines and a sorry script. This film touches the soul sweetly with warm, down-to-earth characters who are acting in a dra ma we are all familiar with — life. “All of my movies have the am bition of being truthful,” said di rector Lasse Hallstrom (‘My Life As A Dog’). “If you want to imitate life, you have to blend drama and comedy since life is dramatic and comedic.” Hallstrom’s recipe for a film of “imitated life” calls for one small, however important, ingredient — a heart. Well, you were righ,t. “Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” has just a fraction of the jokes and spoofs that the previous two had. But, when the the timing is right, it is impossible to resist Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling Lt. Frank Drebin. In “Final Insult,” the newly-married and re tired Lt. Drebin is yanked back into police work by his two partners, Ed Hocken (George Kennedy) and Nordberg (O.J. Simpson). Their mission this time is to stop a mad terrorist. Following Drebin on his escapades and watching the fallout of his every action is fun ny as usual, but writers Pat Proft, David Zucker and Robert LoCash seem to have run out of fresh new situations for Lt. Drebin to mess up. What is new in “Naked Gun 3 3 1/3” are the two characters added to the lineup, Rocco, the maniacal terrorist-for-hire played by Fred Ward, and his voluptuous girlfriend Tanya played by Guess? Jeans model Anna Nicole Smith. Jane (Priscilla Presley) who is adamantly op posed to Frank’s re-entering the force, believes he is having an affair with Tanya and somehow ends up tangled in Drebin’s plan to block the terrorist. The laughs finally start rolling in toward the end of the film, which is set against the back- drop of the Academy Awards. Star cameos from Mary Lou Retton, Raquel Welch, Pia Zadora and the hack of Phil Donahue’s head give the final scenes the humor and spontane ity the rest of the film is lacking. It’s too bad that just as “Naked Gun’s” cast begins creating fireworks, the film ends. It is disappointingly short, only running at about an hour and 20 minutes. Even though the film has the same brand of humor of the other two, unfortunately, e® the good jokes were shown in the preview® the ones left are few and far between. Nielsen who was outrageously funr® “Airplane,” and the previous “Nakedi movies, needs new material to make hislyj physical humor as funny as it once was.
