Spring Break Missions
&
By Paul Neale
The Battalion
As spring break approaches,
many students can hardly wait to
don their ski apparel or swimming
attire. Others, however, look
forward to getting down to work.
Several Texas A&M religious
organizations will spend their spring
break lending helping hands to
extra
workload
for the
break
communities north, south, east and
west of College Station.
Aggie Sisters for Christ (ASC), a
women's Christian association, will
send 22 students north this weekend
to Kansas City, Mo., to tidy up the
Forest Avenue Baptist Church
shelter for women and children.
ASC will clean and paint during the
day and focus their attention on the
women and children in the evenings.
Such outreach programs as ASC's
provide opportunities for students to
serve those in need.
ASC missions officer Alicia Elson
described outreach at the shelter as
"a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun."
Elson said her religious
convictions motivate her to work
during spring break.

"I'll work out of desire to serve
the Lord and do what I believe we're
commanded to do," she said.
For its third year, ASC will spend
the week of spring break at the
Kansas City shelter.
A second group from ASC will
travel to Houston to serve at Impact,
a church in downtown Houston
which provides clothing and food to
those in need. In addition to
preparing lunches and leading a
worship service, the three days ASC
will spend with the kids in that area
include a trip to the beach and the
zoo.

Many women wish they didn't have to
remember their birth control every day. If you're
one of them, you might want to know about
Depo-Provera.
Some of the benefits of Depo-Provera.
Depo-Provera is an injection you get from
your doctor or nurse, every three months. When
taken as scheduled-just 4 times a year-it's
more than 99% effective. So it's one of the most
reliable contraceptives available.
Depo-Provera has been used for many years
by millions of women in countries like England,
France and Sweden. And Depo-Provera is
reversible. Once you stop using it, you can
usually become pregnant within one year.
Depo-Provera from Upjohn is a prescription
product that costs about the same per year as
birth control pills.
But before you consider any birth control
method, you should discuss the risks and benefits
with your healthcare professional.
Some of the side effects of Depo-Provera.
Most women experience irregular or
unpredictable menstrual bleeding and weight
gain. With continued use, many women stop
having monthly periods, but your healthcare
professional can explain why this happens, and
that it is not a medical problem. Use of Depo-
Provera may be associated with a decrease in
the amount of mineral stored in your bones,
which may be considered among the risk factors
for development of osteoporosis.
Depo-Provera is not right for every woman.
Women with a family or personal history
of breast cancer, blood clots, liver disease, or
those who think they might be pregnant, should
not use Depo-Provera.
Remember, Depo-Provera does not protect
against sexually transmitted diseases.
But it does provide highly reliable birth
control you only have to think about 4 times
a year. If you have any questions or concerns,
talk to your healthcare professional.
