Marine's tattoos
get him booted
out of boot camp
Tubularman
By Boomer Cardinol
The Associated Press
DAYTON, Ohio - When Ma
rine Corps recruit Dylan Fogle
showed up with a gargoyle and a
thunderbird tattooed on his head,
he got the boot from boot camp.
Fogle, 20, said the tattoos were
visilhle through his hair when he
signed up for a four-year hitch in
November, and that his recruiter
told him they wouldn't keep him
out of the Marines.
Fogle, a Dayton resident, re
ported for basic training on Jan.
20 at Parris Island, S.C. For the
next three weeks, he said, he per
formed in the top 10 percent of
his platoon.
On Feb. 15, his commanding
officer sent for him.
"He looked at my tattoos and
said they were going to have to
send me home," Fogle said Mon
day. "He said they didn't really
fit the image of the Marine Corps
because the Marines are always
supposed to be looking perfect."
Maj. Scott Campbell,
spokesman for the base, said re
cruits can be discharged if they
have a tattoo officials deem as of
fensive, obscene, or conveying a
negative message about the mili
tary.
The recruiter may have ap
proved Fogle because his hair
was longer at the time, Campbell
said.
The gargoyle is on the hack of
Fogle's head; the mythical thun
derbird over his left ear.
"Gargoyles, in architecture,
were supposed to guard against
evil, symbolically," Fogle said.

Having the name of the faculty
member's department printed in
the advertisement is meant to make
contact between faculty and stu
dents easier. Gage said. Gage has
never been contacted by a student
for Christian advising, he said.
"I have been asked about my
name and title being featured in the
ad once," Gage said. "I understand
there may he a conflict between
church and state. The group
should look into that."
Gage suggested phone numbers
should be listed in place of depart
ments.
James Morgan, speaker of the
Faculty Senate, said the depart
ments and titles should be re
moved from the advertisement.
"It is perfectly reasonable for a
person to he listed in the ad as an
individual," Morgan said. "How
ever, it is inappropriate for titles to
be on the list. 1 understand the
need for concern, hut we must also
be sensitive to people losing per
sonal rights when they hold an of
fice. There must be a distinction
between the two."
Gage was invited to address
the issue at the Hillel Jewish Stu
dent Foundation in February,
where he said students should l>e
tolerant of other's differences,
faults and religions and treat them
with respect.
Rabbi Peter Tarlow, of the Hil
lel Jewish Student Association,
said that, although Gage did not
directly address the issue, he
opened up a dialogue.
"He tried to let non-Christiar?
on campus know he is not only Ik
president of Christian students h
of all students," Tarlow said.
Tarlow said using titles and dfl
partments funded by state
in the advertisement is illegal,ar;
the advertisement puts non-Chrisi
ian students in a difficult positior'
he said.
"How do you explain inissin;
