Rollie White Coliseum for the last home game of their college careers. The Aggies vvTll play Texas Tech University at noon Satur day. A&M, with a 17-8 overall and 10-3 Southwest Conference record, is one game behind the University of Texas. Seniors David Edwards, Chuck Johnson, Brett Murry, Tony Barone, Jr. and Michael Smith will play their last home game at Texas A&M. In the four years they have been at A&M, the program has been from probation to a major contender for the SWC Champi onship. Head coach Tony Barone said this group of seniors has set a tremendous example for the rest of the team. "This group of seniors can look back and say they have changed a program that was at the bottom of the barrel," he said. "It's been a joy working with them. "They have stepped up and See Seniors/ Page 6 A return to success A&M womens head basketball coach relishes role of building program to national prominence, respect William Harrison/Thl Baitauon In her 10th season at A&M, head coach Lynn Hickey leads the Lady Aggies to their first 20-win season and possible conference championship. By Nick Georgandis The Baitalion T wenty-win seasons are old hat for Lynn Hickey. In her first five years as a head coach at Kansas State, Hickey's teams never won less than 23 games a season, and averaged 25 wins a year during that time. Success seemed easy for Hickey, and she sought a new challenge. That ambition brought her to Texas A&M in 1984 as the women's head basket ball coach and associate ath letic director. At the same time Hickey was hired, her husband Bill Hickey - at the time the head baseball coach at KSU - was hired to be an assis tant baseball coach to new manager Mark Johnson. Hickey said that leaving KSU, a top 10 team her last year as coach, was not a dif ficult decision after weigh ing her options. "At that time it was mostly a family move," she said, "because I knew it would benefit Bill just as much or even more then it would benefit me." If Hickey wanted a new mountain to conquer, com ing to A&M must have been like trying to crawl to the top of Mount Everest. The women's basketball team had strung together four consecutive losing sea sons prior to Hickey's ar rival, with a combined record of 40-73 over that stretch. The performance off the court wasn't much better than on: No recruiting had ever been done for women's basketball, and tickets weren't even sold for Lady Aggie home games. Hickey said the past decade was certainly a learning experience, but it is well worth it as the program is now within reach of lofty goals. "It was a challenge, be cause 10 years ago people were still trying to decide if See Hickey/ Page 6 An open letter from Coach Barone To the Student Body: We play an important Southwest Conference game against Texas Tech on Satur day at noon at G. Rollie White Coliseum. Our final home game of the year, it will be "senior day" in honor of our five se niors. 1 want to encourage the student body to give our seniors a well-deserved show of support. As you know, an unfortu nate incident occurred after we played Tech on Feb. 5 in Lubbock. We want to em phasize that the Tech play ers, coaches and 99 percent of their fans had nothing to do with the incident. I want our student body to show everyone what class is all about. You should cheer and be enthusiastic as you can be about our team. Our seniors have changed the direction of A&M basket ball and 1 do not want any thing negative to be associat ed with their last home game. Our fans have been tremendously loyal all sea son. Please help us get back on track by showing up in force and cheering us on to a big win in a classy manner.
