It took him 15 minutes-to suggest I try Prozac to ieve what he called a "jOiild form of depression.” "It's a genetic problem; most Jews have it,” said odwin, who also is "All of us could probably use a little bit of help with our depres sions. Hint, hint." - Psychologist Jim Goodwin said while being interviewed by an AP reporter ^vish. "If you're inter- :ed, I'd be happy to see u for therapy.” Goodwin has found rtself the focus of a na- nwide stir, highlight- in television and print ws magazines, over wether Prozac is being escribed properly. He imates he has treated nost 700 people in this central Washington city of — and every one of them takes Prozac or an- ler antidepressant. 1 le has taken Prozac since 1989. In June, he faces a hearing before the Wasltington tensing Board of Psychology on cliarges lie pres- red patients to take Prozac, prescribed the drug thout adequate diagnosis and breaclaed patient afidentiality. The board could revoke Goodwin's ense. interviewed Goodwin at a Wenatchee restaurant out the accusations, which he says are unfounded, ithin 15 minutes, Goodwin told me I suffered from Id depression. I was taken aback and told him so. After getting a promotion and starting a new job a new part of the country, 1 was feeling pretty od about life. But Goodwin said people with mild pression often don't recognize the symptoms until they get treatment. Dr. Ronald Fieve, president of the Foundation for Depression and Manic Depression in New York City and professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia Uni versity, said Prozac is not approved to treat mild de pression. "The only two diagnoses the FDA has approved Prozac for are major depressive disorder and obses sional compulsive disorder," Fieve«aid. Fieve, whose book "Prozac” will be published next month by Avon Books, said he spends at least 45 minutes with a patient, then orders a battery of tests, including an electrocardiogram and blood work, before mak ing a diagnosis. Fieve would not discuss Good win specifically. As T was trying to close the interview with Goodwin after 90 minutes, he said most people could benefit from Prozac, then focused again on me. "Get yourself a good cognitive therapist and a good physician who knows about these new medi cines, and you'd be surprised how your life could change,” he said. "All of us could probably use a little bit of help with our depressions. Hint, hint.” I was trying to finish an interview without antag onizing the subject. "Everybody could probably use some good thera py,” 1 conceded. "Therapy doesn't preclude the use of a nice SSRI, too,” he responded, referring to a class of antidepres sants known as selective serotonin reuptake in hibitors. "It won't hurt you,” he added. ★ ★ ★ l /Cd A/ ★ ★ ★ CELEBRATE LOW PRICES 12-Pk./12-Oz. Cans All Varieties Coors Beer Keg of Coors Beer p/rnroTiiG-riT: Super Size Pkcr.
