The 1 record Southwi their fir year ago Senio Harlan s day long "You Richards sees money as moth for impending death of SWC The Associated Press AUSTIN — Gov. Ann Richards, a Baylor Universi ty graduate, said Wednesday that she grew up think ing of Southwest Conference football as an immutable fact of life. Now, it may go the way of other great institutions — driven,-she says, by money, "When I was a kid growing up, there were certain truths and verities in life, and one was that Joe Louis was always going t^ be the world champion, that Franklin Roosevelt v\^as always going to be president, that the Yankees were always going to win the pen nant, and that there was no football except the South west Conference," Richards said. "And so, in a sort of emotional way, I really am not happy at this circumstance." But, she added of the potential SWC breakup, "In a practical way, this has been talked about so very long that it comes really as no shock to any of us." Richards' alma mater is among four SWC schools — with the University of Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech — to receive invitations to join the Big Eight Con ference. Four other universities are being left behind: Texas Christian, Southern Methodist, Rice and Houston Richards said it's up to the schools to decide they want to do: "This was not a political dedsiot be made." And although she said her chief of staff,)® Fainter, has spoken with the schools, Richardssai:j I have not, did not choose to, did not want toplayr { in that decision because frankly, I think I snouM out loud what everyone recognizes ..."fResFWl are driven by television, and television-is drireff money." V I She speculated that the Big Eight deeped topi ter the schools "that they felt were going Ao brings the best television contract. I think that's it, pure I simple, and nothing beyond it." Richards said her biggest concern for schools:: would be left out of the merger "is the money.ill felt all along that if they were going to dosomete like this they had to have a phase-in period." Asked what will happen to the TCUs of thewsl she said, "I hope they're going to continue to beoist the most popular, sought-after schools in the staid Texas. Right now, almost every kid I talk tote graduating from high school, you ask themwlf they'd like to go, and they say TCU." McDonald's asks customers not to light up in 1,400 restaurants The Associated Press CHICAGO - McDonald's, the company that foresaw America's love affair with fast food, bowed to the public's growing distaste for cigarettes and banned smok ing Wednesday from its 1,400 company-owned U.S. restaurants. A week after it was sued over the hazards of secondhand smoke, McDonald's Corp. also joined oth er chains in announcing support of federal legislation to ban smok ing in all public places. More than 3,600 of 9,100 Mc Donald's stores nationwide will be smoke-free. About 2,200 restaurants banned smoking last year, chain said. The company urged its re maining franchises to ban smok ing. Another 253 stores in Cana da also would be smoke-free un der the ban. "They acted as they should, particularly since they more than any other attract more young children into their restaurants and there is growing evidence about the negative effects of smoking on those children/'said John F. Banzhaf, executive direc tor of Action on Smoking and Health in Washington. McDonald's move comes one week after the Texas attorney gen eral sued the restaurant chain and four others, demanding they ei ther make their restaurants smoke-free, ventilate them better or post signs warning of the dan gers of secondhand smoke. Ron Dusek, a spokesman for Texas Attorney General Dan Morales, praised McDonald's "for its good corporate citizenship." McDonald's spokeswoman Terri Capatosto said the idea be gan with a test in 40 restaurants and had nothing to do with the Texas lawsuit. "If you look back, the fact that we started the test a year ago means . . . we think this issi* important," she said. The National Council ofOj Restaurants endorsed a Wednesday introduced last)' by U.S. Rep. Henry Waxmaa Calif., that would prohibits! ing in virtually all nonresM buildings or require separate': tilation of smoking areas. Terri Dort, the restaurant ciTs executive director, saidsw law would remove compete concerns voiced by restate chains afraid of losing custote About a third of the 90,000 res ,; rants operated by associate members already prohibit ing, Dort said. Food industry analyst Mte G. Mueller of Montgomeryte rities Inc. said smoking ba! fast-food restaurants site have little effect on sales' could affect full-service rei' : rants where customersW would have to refrainll Requirement Continued from Page 1 Michael Hand, an associate pro fessor of philosophy and human ities, said the administration is obviously not committed to shared governance. "Gage does not have the moral authority to decide the curriculum for the College of Liberal Arts," Hand said. "This was obviously a political move." Richard Street, a professor of speech communications and the atre arts, said the issue of faculty governance is very important. "I feel like the shots are being called for us," Street said. Gage said his decision was unique because there was also a University-wide proposal for a multicultural requirement recom mended by the Faculty Senate. "I will not set a precedent for deciding curriculum changes at the college level," Gage said. The interim dean said he did not approve the College of Liber al Arts' original proposal be cause he is still looking at the Faculty Senate's proposal and he would prefer a University- A«S ou The shooti: but pi and c 65.
