S.A. zoo officials
shoot stray dogs
for killing gazelles
The Associated Press
SAN ANTONIO - Several
dogs that sneaked onto the San
Antonio Zoo grounds were shot
to death by zoo officials who say
the strays mauled and killed two
gazelles.
Park officials discovered the
gazelles' remains Saturday, said
Mel Richardson, the zoo's chief
veterinarian.
A witness who says she saw
workers kill the dogs said about
25 park employees with guns de
scended on the animals.
"It was the most bizarre thing
I've seen in my life," said Elaine
Davis, who lives in a high-rise
apartment adjacent to the zoo.
"All of a sudden, this fellow
shoots the first dog and he
doesn't quite make it — the dog
was still yelping around — and
another fellow pulls a gun and
kills it," Davis said.
"The other dogs were trying
to get over the fence and they
were just picking them off."
Park officials said the dogs
posed a danger to workers and
other animals.
"We've had dogs on the prop
erty in the last three weeks
twice," Richardson said.
"But they were able to get out
before we could catch them."
"If they did get loose in the
zoo, there are a fair number of
unprotected animals that would
have been in danger," he said.
The bodies of the dogs were
being held in a freezer storage
area until they could be collected
by Animal Control officials,
Richardson said.

hold as many people as want to
come here. I wish it could, but it
can't."
Unlike A&M, the University
of Texas has responded to the
overwhelming number of appli

standards for students ranking in
the 16th to 25th percentile of
their high school class.
Effective this summer high
