The Associated Press
HOUSTON - The Houston
Astros on Tuesday agreed to
terms on 1994 contracts with
righthand pitchers Pete Harnisch
and Tom Edens.
Harnisch, 27, settled at $3.2
million, a raise of $1.38 million
over his previous contract. It was
less than his requested $3.8 mil
lion, but more than the $2.85 mil
lion offered by the team.
Edens, 32, agreed to a $475,000
salary, a raise of $150,000. He had
asked for $575,000 and was of
fered $375,000.

Tuesday night as the Bucks
stunned Hakeem Olajuwon and
the Houston Rockets 106-98.
The Bucks, blown out 115-94 on
Saturday by Seattle, the team with
the best record in the NBA, held
their own with the Rockets, who
own the second-best record, now at
33-12.
Milwaukee, with a record of just
14-33, played its best game of the
season in winning for just the sixth
time in 23 home games. The Bucks
led 73-68 after three quarters and
used a 12-2 run, including five
points from Ken Norman, to
stretch their lead to 91-79 with 4:58

face and Patterson was knocked
unconscious. A real KO.
Patterson said he was trying to
break up the fight between
Barone and the other fans and he
has pressed assault charges with
the Texas Tech University Police.
If it is true that Patterson was
moving in to break up the fight
then he should be commended
for his bravery or questioned for
his stupidity. Even a casual ob
server who watches the fight on
tape can see the intensity of the
scuffle. Did Patterson really
think he could get involved in the
fight and come out unscathed?
It's like my old Grandpappy
used to say, "If you're going to
try and break up a dog fight,
you're going to get hurt."
Of course, he also used to say
he was the Queen of the Old
West, so I don't know if Grand
pappy is the best person to quote.
Anyway, one s of the most
ridiculous things surrounding
this whole situation is accusations
that Barone and the players
helped to incite the incident by
staying on the court and not go
ing to the dressing room as soon
as possible. All I saw (on the
video tape, and without the bene
fit of actually being there) was a
bunch of loud-mouth Tech fans
trying to exert their masculine su
periority by fisticuffs.
Barone said he stopped to help
John Jungers, a junior forward for
A&M. Jungers was pushed from
behind and being verbally at
tacked by a Tech fan.
Even the Southwest Confer
ence Commissioner Steve Hatch-
ell said the SWC would probably
not take any disciplinary action.
But, steps are being taken.
Texas Tech has "tightened court-
side security" to try and prevent
anymore of these unfortunate in
cidents.
Hey, what a novel idea. Why
didn't they think of that in 1989
or 1990 when Texas guard Lance
Blanks had verbal exchanges with
fans and a Tech fan tried to con
front Texas head coach Tom Pen
ders?
Tech will form a barricade to
separate fans from players leav
ing the court (hey, what rocket
scientist came up with that one)
and provide additional security
personnel around the visiting
team (must have been a Nobel
Prize winner).
The trouble with the whole sit
uation is not court-side security
or whether or not A&M stayed on
the court too long celebrating
their victory. The trouble lies
with Texas Tech and its desper
ate, almost pitiful, need of a big
rival.
Every time A&M plays them
or Texas plays them, thev try to
hype it as a big rival. Players for
A&M and Texas approach games
with the attitude, " Hey, it's just
Tech."
Tech is almOkt co-dependent 1
when it comes to these rivalries. I
can almost hear them from here.
"Please, please be our rival.
Come on, we really hate you.
Why can't you really hate us?
You know, it'll be fun. You push
and shove us, we'll push and
shove you. Maybe have a few
fights. Please. Pleeeeeease."
I don't think so Tim. Basically
they're not even worth the effort.
A&M beats them every year any
way.
So the officials in Huntsville
should get the chair ready. Mr.
Scott Patterson has been assault
ed and big, bad Joe Wilbert is the
culprit. He can't get away with
this, by God! Imagine trying to
protect your coach and team
mates. The nerve!
