BROWNSVILLE — Fortunetelling and the death
penalty were among the topics Monday as attorneys
questioned potential jurors in the trial of a woman
bharged with bankrolling the murder of her daugh
ter's ex-boyfriend.
Dora Garcia Cisneros, 56, is accused of enlisting a
fortuneteller named Maria Mercedes Martinez and a
San Antonio man named Daniel Garza to find oth
ers to kill 18-year-old Joey Fischer in March 1993.
The questioning of jury candidates focused in
part on the credibility of fortunetellers because Mar
tinez has pleaded guilty and agreed to testify for the
prosecution.
Attorneys spent more than an hour questioning
individuals Monday for potential service on the
panel that will weigh capital murder and conspiracy
charges against Cisneros and Garza, 43.
Two jurors were seated Friday, and another was
added to the jury by Monday afternoon. Attorneys
expected the painstaking process to continue
through this week as they work their way through a
pool of about 160 citizens.
Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz
asked the potential jurors whether they would be
able to consider the death penalty if the defendants
are convicted. He struck one woman from jury duty
after she said she believed that God was the only
one who should take a life.
Cisneros' defense attorney, Tony Canales, asked
the panelists whether they believed in for
tunetellers.
Canales also asked them what they felt about
people who make plea bargains for lighter sentences
in exchange for testimony against co-defendants.
