No, I'm talking about stuff
that we arm-chair quarter

"Man, I wish I could do
that!".
But we can't. But, maybe
we should.
By implementing some
characteristics of sports into
real life, some things would
be a lot more enjoyable. Al

Lady Aggies
to face Tech
A&M has chance to crack top 25,
gain national recognition
By Jose de Jesus Ortiz
The Battalion
The Lady Aggies must beat defending National
Champion Texas Tech to stay atop the Southwest
Conference standings when they play Saturday at
G. Rollie White Coliseum at 7 p.m.
Point guard Lisa Branch said A&M is ready for
the challenge, but wonders "can you say seven," as
in seven conference wins for the Lady Aggies.
"To win, we just need to execute our offense,"
Branch said. "If the girls can shoot from the out
side, maybe that can bring them out of their 2-3
zone.
"If that happens, I hope our centers can take
over."
A&M (14-3, 6-0 in the SWC) is the only unbeaten
team in the SWC, but center Martha McClelland
said a win over Texas Tech (17-2, 5-1 in the SWC
and No. 4 in the nation) is necessary for A&M to
gain respect, both for herself and A&M.
"We need to beat them, so that we can send a
message," McClelland said. "People in the SWC
say that Kelly (Cerny) and I are slow immobile post
players.
"If we beat Tech that will send a message that we
are legitimate."
Head coach Lynn Hickey agrees that a win over
the Lady Red Raiders will boost the Lady Aggies'
and said A&M needs to play its best defensive effort
of the year.
"It is just a matter of who plays the best defense,"
she said. "And who controls the boards, is probably
going to be a major key.
"We are going to need to play the best game that
we played all year."
A&M hurdler jumps
in great expectation
By Stewart Doreen
The Battalion
A njanette Kirkland
is taking the 1994
track and field
scene by storm
this season with decisive
first-place victories the
women's 55-meter hurdles
and her low-key approach.
Kirkland, a sophomore
from San Antonio, is start
ing to fulfill the high expec
tations that brought her to
Texas A&M, said A&M as
sistant coach Abe Brown.
Brown, who is responsi
ble for the men's and
women's hurdlers, said he
feels Kirkland is just begin
ning to make the transition
that will make her one of
the best in the country.
"She has established her
self as an elite athlete,"he
said. "She has good size,
great speed, heart and de
termination.
"She knows how to
win."
Kirkland demonstrated
the ability that heralded her
as one of the nation's top
high school recruits with
victories in her two races
this year.
In both races, she provi
sionally qualified for the
NCAA Indoor Champi
onships.
Coach Brown said Kirk
land's rapid ascent is be
cause of an aggressive
goal-making process.
"Ingenuity has become
more focused through her
goals," Coach Brown said.

A&M track team to Reno
The Texas A&M men's and women's track teams
will travel this weekend to Reno, Nev. for the Bill Cos
by Invitational.
A&M assistant Coach Abe Brown said he expects
strong performances by the Aggies and hopes the fast
track will produce NCAA qualifying times.
"The facility at Reno is set up for peak-type perfor
mances," Brown said. "We're hoping to qualify people
for the NCAA Indoor Championships. We also want
to build confidence for the Southwest Conference
meet."
