Gift shop offers contest to sell store By Laurel Mosley Thl Battalion The owner of a gift store in Bryan is show ing that some deals are not too good to be true. Ron Martin, the owner of Pop-Abilities, is holding a contest to transfer ownership of the store because he and his wife, Robin, no longer have time to manage the business. Contestants must submit a $200 entry fee and an original jingle, slogan or a 500 word essay telling why they want to own their own business. The most innovative entry wins complete ownership of the business. Martin has taken steps to assure he will not take a loss on this offer. If he does not re ceive at least 500 entries, he will cancel the contest and return the money to the contes tants. In addition to Pop-Abilities, Martin also owns an advertising company and his wife works full time at Texas A&M. "Owning your own business is a full-time job," Martin said. "My wife and I just don't have the time anymore." Martin said owning a private business will be a learning experience for the winner of the contest. "To own your own business gives a sense of pride," Martin said. "It takes a real com mitment." Martin encourages students to enter the contest and get the advantage of owning their own business without spending a lot of mon ey to purchase the business. "The exciting part is a person can own their own business without paying a lot for it," Martin said. "It's a great way to get expe rience." Sam Gillespie, a professor of marketing, said the contest is a good idea if the right per son wins. "If somebody wants the business andk lieves the name has market value and c; promote it, things could really workoutk them," said Gillespie. Gillespie said owning the business cot:: be a good educational opportunity for sit dents. "They could learn how to promotear: merchandise a business and work on a bt; get," said Gillespie. "They would also k how to create an effective marketingpn gram." Martin said he put the business on:: market a year ago and when it didn't selit decided to have the contest. He said beg the idea from a similar contest in Boston. "I've been researching the idea and!:; cided to wait to start the contest until thesr. dents came back," Martin said. The deadline for entries is April 15, Bj Anyone interested should call (409) 361-1 or 1-800-733-2917.
