Page 6 The Battalion Tuesday, January 25,B Shelter Continued from page 4 members within the shelter. The process is performed by injection only and the corpses are then buried. No animal is used for laboratory research in any way. Each day the shelter staff goes through a routine of checking and feed ing the animals. At this time, the animal is compared to the recent arrivals and the most adoptable animals remain. The shelter can only hold so many stray ani mals, and those that are not chosen are euthanized. Most employees who work at the shelter are community volunteers. Some may be people who are required to com plete service hours for crimes commit ted, while others may be people who want to give their time because they love animals. In a given week, there may be up to four A&M students volunteering in the shelter. Upon arrival, volunteers are briefed on the basics of the shelter. A short film is shown in order to make the volunteer aware of the reasons for the shelter, as well as what would be required of them. Bice said Aggies who volunteer their time gain a great deal of knowledge working at the shelter. Many of them have gone on to veterinary school and are now educating their own communi ties about the problem of overpopula tion. Not only do individual students con tribute to the shelter, but Texas A&M itself is becoming increasingly more involved. The veterinary school has discussed the possibility of using preadoption shelter animals to teach veterinary students spay ing and neutering techniques. "We have always viewed the animal shelter in a positive light," said A&M veterinary professor Dr. John August. "We try to help out whenever we can. By spaying and neutering, more animals can be spared in the future." And to increase adoption and claim opportunities even more, beginning in February, the shelter will open its doors seven days a week. "That means for everybody who works here, their lives are going to change," Bice said. "I will never have every Sunday off again. But that's my commitment to saving lives." "We have always viewed the animal shelter in a posi tive light. We try to help out whenever we can. By spaying and neutering, more animals can be spared in the future." -Dr. John August A&M veterinary professoi The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569 / Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building ’AGGIE* Private Party Want Ads $10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $1000 or less (price must appear in ad). Wiatt Continued from Page 4 "Many were committers of heinous crimes, mass murderers like Henry Lee Lucas." "... I had parking as part of my jurisdiction for the first six years. I probably saw more vi olence in the parking lots than I had while wearing a badge in the rest of the world." -Robert E. Wiatt UPD director War II," he said. "1 served in the Battle of Okinawa and saw a lot of action. During my last year of law school I realized I was bored." Raised in Ohio, Wiatt attended the University of Cincinnati where he received his bachelor's degree in business administra tion. He then attended Chase College of Law. During his last year of law school, Wiatt decided to become an FBI agent. "An FBI agent came to the school and gave a talk on career day," Wiatt said. "Ten of us de cided to take the test and apply after his talk, but I was the only one accepted." Wiatt met his wife Ann while working for the FBI in 1951. "She was working in personnel while I was a new agent," Wiatt said. The fact that his wife was em ployed by the FBI, Wiatt said, is one reason she could stomach all of his dangerous encounters over the years. "Because she worked there, she knows the training we've had. Therefore, she wasn't quite as jumpy as a person not exposed to that environment." Wiatt and his wifehadl* sons, Scot and Jeff. Scot, thecl est, was diagnosed wj Hodgkin's disease his senior;; in high school and died at the; of 18. Wiatt's other son, Jeff,is coach in Houston and madeWii a grandfather twice over. Despite the ups and dor over the years, Wiatt seems ve happy with his life. "I've led a very interesting® exciting life," Wiatt said, "is! find a degree of excitement he at A&M." After retiring from theFi Wiatt worked as the chief inves gator of the Brazos Countyd; trict attorney's office forh years. In 1983> he came to Ai thinking he had begun a relaxin low stress retirement job. "I thought it would belt; stressful. But I had parking: part of my jurisdiction for their six years," he said. "I probah saw more violence in the parte lots than I had while wearing badge in the rest of the world,' "The student body a! A&M is the best I've ever encountered. Working with them is both challenging and rewarding." -Robert E. H//al UPD directo Wiatt has since stayed withthi University Police Departme: and said he enjoys working wt the A&M students. "The student body at A&M: the best I've ever encountered Working with them is both dte lenging and rewarding," Wial: said. "It's definitely not a retiremer: job," he said.
