State Page 2 & Local The Battalion Tuesday, January 25,1994 Weather opens doors for state gas The Associated Press I AUSTIN — The extremely cold weather in the northern parts of the country has helped spark in creased interest in exploration for Texas natural gas, state officials say. Land Commissioner Garry Mauro said Monday that he has extended the April 5 lease sale's nominat ing period for drilling on state lands because of the additional interest. “There is a demand for Texas natural gas. We have received several late nominations for our spring sale, indicating that companies are interested in increasing gas production and building reserves," he said. “I also have reason to believe that some energy companies want to rebuild reserves after pulling them down during the recent cold spell," he said. Spring sale nominations had been closed as of Dec. 17, but the land office said it will consider those that have been sent in since and those received on or before Feb. 1. Some 200 nominations already have been received. Mauro said most of the interest for gas explo ration is in the Gulf of Mexico. The land office will put up 30 additional gulf tracts for nomination. The land office deposited $149.4 million during the 1993 fiscal year to the Permanent School Fund, which helps pay for public schools. Clinton Continued from Page 1 Meuret said one main thing he would like to see changed is for eign policy. "Most important is world lead ership and as far as protecting in terest abroad he's done a bad job," he said. Thomas said Clinton never has been strong with foreign policy, and although he likes what has been done so far, there's a lot more to be accomplished. Dr. Betty Unterberger, profes sor of history, said foreign policy may have hurt his popularity ear lier in his administration. "His ability to get NAFTA through, and his meeting with Asian leaders to discuss ways of opening trade with those newly industrialized countries, shows a possibility of increased foreign re lations," Unterberger said. After Clinton's weeklong trip to Western Europe and Russia, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll indicated 53 percent of Americans approved of his han dling of foreign policy, up from 33 percent in October. Thomas said outside scandals, such as Whitewater and allega tions of sexual misconduct during his term as Arkansas governor, are hindering the support Clinton deserves. "These outside allegations are unfounded, and I think the pub lic needs to focus on issues that pertain to the present not the past," said Thomas.
