chose Inman, Dole hailed Inman
as a “very good person for the
job/' but criticized Clinton for try
ing to make “big, big defense
cuts/'
Inman said that “my family
was not enthusiastic about my re
turn to public service." Inman
said his wife had specifically
asked him to promise that a for
mer domestic worker not be em
barrassed because the Inmans had
not paid required Social Security
taxes, an issue that came to light
shortly after Clinton announced
the nomination.
“Now she's afraid she might
lose her house," Inman said of his
former housekeeper. He said he
recently paid back Social Security
taxes even though he believed he
was not required by law to do so
and planned to hire a lawyer to
help the former employee resolve
any outstanding tax issues.
Inman, 62, ended three decades
of government service in 1982,
when he resigned as deputy direc
tor of the Central Intelligence
Agency. He also is a former direc
tor of the National Security
Agency. At the time he left the
CIA post, he said he had lost his
zest for bureaucratic infighting.
When he accepted Clinton's
nomination in December, Inman
said he neither sought nor wanted
the job, but accepted it out of
"duty and country."
Clinton's choice of Inman to
succeed Defense Secretary Les As-
pin was widely praised on Capitol
Hill. Clinton announced his
choice of Inman on Dec. 16, just a
day after Aspin had been forced
to resign. At the time, Clinton
praised the retired Navy admi
ral's intellect, integrity and leader
ship.
Aspin had said he would stay
on until a successor was con
firmed. Inman's confirmation
hearings were scheduled to begin
next week in the Senate.
Inman was expected to face
questions about his private-sector
dealings with the defense indus
try. In addition, Inman told the
White House he had failed to pay
Social Security taxes for a domes
tic helper. He paid about $7,000 in
back taxes.
However, the White House
had insisted the matter would not
disqualify him as a candidate.
After retiring from the Navy in
1982, Inman worked with a num
ber of high-tech and computer in
formation companies in Texas.
More recently, he has remained in
Austin and done consulting work,
served on corporate boards and
taught at the University of Texas.
Inman earned nearly $1 million
in 1989 from Tracer Inc., a defense
contractor he headed for two
years, according to records on file
with the Securities and Exchange
Commission. Inman received
$422,000 in salary, $250,000 in de
ferred compensation and a
$300,000 bonus from the previous
year.
