day at Autry Court in Houston.
A&M, which defeated preseason
'' league favorite Texas earlier in the
week, moved to 2-0 in SWC play and 8-
4 overall. Rice fell to 8-5 and 1-1.
David Edwards and Chuck Hender
son paced the Aggies with 17 points
each. Rice's Scott Tynes led all scorers
with 20 points.
Rice used a 21-10 run during the last
13:54 of the first half to gain its largest
lead of the game at 33-25.
Edwards hit two 3-pointers in the
game. The first one tied the game at 42
with 12:12 left; the second one gave the
Aggies their first lead of the second half
at 45-44 with 10:25 left.
Rice led, 62-60, with 1:14 left when Tynes
v canned a three-pointer from the top of the key.
'Twenty-five seconds later, A&M regained the
dead when forward Joe Wilbert turned an of
fensive rebound into a bucket, was fouled by
Tynes and made the free throw. That gave the
Aggies a 63-62 lead with 0:49 to play.
After a Rice turnover. Chuck Henderson
converted a pair of free throws to push the
lead to three points with 26 seconds left.

the way.

second half of Saturday's game.
Michael Smith, Damon Johnson and Tony Barone, Jr. celebrate
after defeating Texas, 85-84, on Wednesday at G. Rollie White.
Martha McClelland, Bambi Ferguson and
Lana Tucker came off the bench to spark the
Lady Aggies (9-3, 2-0) to a 76-47 win and a
share of first place in the SWC with Texas
Tech.
A&M head coach Lynn Hickey said she was
pleased with the way McClelland stepped up
to stop Rice's guard penetration on the fast-
break while dropping in 20 points for the
A&M offense.
Rice head coach Cristy McKinney said she
thought the Lady Owls did not do a good job
containing McClelland.
"She is a very good player, and we just
didn't do a good job defending her," McKin
ney said. "You can't let her take uncontested
shots as we did."
With A&M leading 45-39 midway through
the second half. Rice was held scoreless during
a six-minute stretch while the Lady Aggies
Texas A&M forward Joe Wilbert
blocked an attempted last-second
layup by Texas' B.J. Tyler to pre
serve the Aggies' 85-84, come-from-
behind victory on Wednesday night
in G. Rollie White Coliseum.
A crowd of 5,823 watched the Aggies (7-4,
1-0 in conference) battle back from a seven-
point deficit with 2:42 remaining in the second
half to beat the Longhorns (7-6, 0-1) in the
teams' Southwest Conference opener.
"This was a nice win for our program,"
A&M head coach Tony Barone said. "I'm
proud of our players, and I'm proud of the
way they fought at the end of the game."
A&M guard Chuck Henderson played a vi
tal role in the Aggies' late run by making two
three-pointers in the last two minutes. Hen
derson's second three-pointer came with 0:27
left and narrowed the score to 83-84, Texas.
Longhorn guard Tommy Penders, son of
Texas head coach Tom Penders, was fouled on
the inbound pass by Damon Johnson,

A&M football coordinator
positions open after break
By Mark Smith
The Battalion
The Texas A&M football
team lost two of its key coach
ing figures during the holiday
break.
A&M's defensive coordinator
Bob Davie and offensive coordi
nator Bob Toledo will not be on
the Aggie sidelines next season
directing the maroon and white.
Davie announced on Jan. 7
that he would become Notre
Dame's defensive coordinator.
Toledo, who had served as
offensive coordinator and quar
terback coach since 1989, was
fired on Jan. 3 by head coach
R.C. Slocum.
Davie had served as defen
sive coordinator and inside line
backer coach for the Aggies dur
ing the past five years. He was
promoted to assistant head
coach last spring.
Davie said he had trouble de
ciding whether to accept the po
sition with Fighting Irish.
"Whenever you have a
change like this you're going to
experience some mixed emo
tions," Davie said. "I don't
know if people know or care
how hard this decision was for
me to make, but it was extreme
ly difficult.
"My decision came down to
the challenge that Notre Dame
presented."
At the end of the past season
the A&M defense was national
ly ranked No. 1 in pass efficien
cy defense with 74.9 yards per
game. No. 3 in total defense
with 247.6 yards per game and
No. 2 in scoring defense 10.82
points per game.
Slocum said he believed
A&M needed to change its of
fensive coordinator to help the
team develop a more pro-style
offensive system.
Toledo, however, defended
his direction of A&M's offense.
"I did what I was told to do
here at Texas A&M, and I did
the best I possibly could do,"
Toledo said. "We won a lot of
games and broke a lot of records
and I'm proud of what I did. "
During Toledo's career at
A&M, the offense broke SWC
and school records in 1990 for
yards rushing with 3,829 yards
and set A&M's total offense
record with 5,653 yards,
In 1991, the offense broke the
A&M scoring record with 36.6
points per game, and this past
season broke a school record
with 404 points for the season..
Gary Kubiak will take over
the duties of the quarterback
coach. Kubiak, who was A&M's
running backs coach, was quar
terback for A&M from 1979-82
and played for the Denver Bron
cos for nine years.
Slocum said Kubiak is highly
qualified to assume the position.
"Gary's knowledge of the
quarterback position is out
standing," Slocum said. "He
will be a tremendous asset to
our offensive philosophy."
