were concealed in an attempt to keep the Soviets from
finding out about them. Nevertheless, the Soviets all
along have claimed there have been 1,080 U.S. tests.

metric tons of plutonium and that about a third of it
(32.5 metric tons) continues to exist in various forms at
weapons facilities in Washington state. South Caroli
na, Colorado, Idaho and New Mexico.
— About 24 million pounds of mercury is believed
to have been used at the Y-12 weapons plant at Oak
Ridge, Tenn., but that "incomplete records ... prevent a
fully accurate accounting of the quantities received,
used, and lost to the environment.
