MABLETON, Ga. - A drug
store chain is under fire for al
legedly putting anti-theft tags on
more black-oriented products
than ones used by whites. Com
pany officials denied the claim.
“This is not a race issue. This is
a shoplifting issue/' said Bobby
W. Little, vice president of store
operations for Big B Inc., which
operates 350 stores in the South
east, including 18 Drugs for Less.
“We're looking for items that
we know are being pilfered in
stores," he said Tuesday. “Lots of
these are teen-age related more
than anything else."
The Atlanta Journal-Constitu
tion reported Tuesday that at
least two Drugs for Less in the At
lanta area placed security tags on
products aimed at blacks, while
similar products for whites had
no security devices.
Bruce Roberts, assistant gener
al counsel for the Southeast re
gion of the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored
People, was among critics who
said the tagging scheme implied
blacks were more likely than
whites to shoplift.
"A red flag was justifiably
raised by the existence of tags on
African-American products ver
sus non-African-American prod
ucts," he said.
Films, batteries, razor blades,
diapers, headache powders and
condoms were among the items
the company has been tagging for
several months with 11/2-inch
black and white plastic bars. Little
said. The bars set off alarms at
stores' front doors if they are not
removed at checkout counters.
At the Mableton store in sub
urban Atlanta, most of the goods
were tagged in a section of pre
dominantly black products such
as Curly Perm gel activator and
African Pride Hair & Scalp Spray.
Coffee-colored Afro-tique
stockings were tagged. Next to
them, a row of identical white-
colored hosiery was not.
Not all of the store's black
items were tagged — at the cos
metics counter, one line of make
up for dark complexions was
tagged while another was not.
Little said 15 percent of the
merchandise in a typical Drugs
for Less store is tagged. About 10
percent of the tagged merchan
dise is aimed at blacks, he said.
