Johnson hoping Dallas can rebound from losi
The Associated Press
IRVING — Jimmy Johnson loves a good
psychological challenge and he's got one with
a Super Bowl team that has become star-
crossed.
“There's not a large margin of error now,"
the Dallas Cowboys coach said Tuesday. “It
looks like our Jan. 2 game with the New York
Giants is going to be a big ballgame. But we
have to take care of business in the meantime."
Johnson is into damage control after an ago
nizing 16-14 loss to Miami on Thanksgiving
Day which ended on the crazy Leon Lett
blocked field goal blunder.
“It's been a very disruptive year," Johnson
said. “It's been difficult for us to get on a roll
like we'did last year."
Things haven't become so desperate that
Johnson has referred to the psychology book
“Flow," which he used during the Super Bowl.
“I haven't had time to thumb through the
chapters," Johnson said. “But this is a critical
time for us. I think we will be fine and can still
finish where we want to finish. But if we don't
take care of business we'll be explaining what
happened for the next six months.
“We had a swagger coming into this season
but it's not as big as it used to be," Johns
said. “I think we can get it back."
Johnson said he's not concerned whej
the Cowboys have homefield advantage:
the playoffs.
''Our goal is to win the division,;
healthy, and be playing well when theplaij
start," Johnson said. "If we have to playoj.
road, we play on the road, no big deal
doesn't make any difference."
Dallas got into the Super Bowl in Jan®
after defeating San Francisco in thetitlegi;
at Candlestick Park.
The Cowboys are currently 7-4.
Jacksonville catches NFL franchise Men
The Associated Press
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The NFL took on a distinct
Southeast tilt Tuesday, selecting longshot Jack
sonville, Fla., to join Charlotte as its 1995 expansion
teams.
“The Southeast," commissioner Paul Tagliabue
said, “is a terrific area for football, a real hotbed."
So it will be the Jacksonville Jaguars playing in
aqua shirts trimmed with yellow sleeves and black
spots and an open-mouthed jaguar on the helmet.
They joined the Carolina Panthers by beating out
the old-line cities of St. Louis and Baltimore, as well
as Memphis, Term. St. Louis and Baltimore each has
lost teams in the past decade; Memphis was one of
the favorites when the NFL first began discussing ex
pansion six years ago.
“Listen, in the NFL I'm not surprised about any
thing/' said Ralph Wilson, owner of the Buffalo Bills.
“You never go into any meeting with a predeter
mined view."
Charlotte was chosen five weeks ago at a meeting
in which the owners couldn't decide on a second
team. This time they did because Tagliabue made up
his mind to support Jacksonville on Monday.
The expansion and finance committees went 10-2
for Jacksonville, with Robert Tisch of the New York
Giants and Norman Braman of the Philadelphia Ea
gles supporting Baltimore.
The final expansion vote was 26-2, with Braman
and James Busch Orthwein of the New England Pa
triots voting against Jacksonville. Tisch's co-owner,
Wellington Mara, switched the Giants to the majori
ty-
The Los Angeles Rams, Cincinnati Bengals and
the Patriots all have indicated willingness to move.
Baltimore is interested in the Rams and St. Louis in
the Patriots.
“We will follow our normal process for moving
teams," said Tagliabue citing rules requiring owners
to show they can do better in a new territory.

picked up five steals.
Branch said she was sur
prised by her totals because she
did not think she had a good
rhythm going.
"I wasn't really feeling it
tonight, but when they started
double-teaming, I was always
the one left open.," Branch said.
Defense was also a big key
for A&M. The Lady Tigers
managed only 16 first half
points with a lowly .280 field
McClelland
goal percentage.
After TSU got off to a quick start in the second
half, A&M put the defensive clamps back on,
outscoring their opponents, 33-8, over an 11
minute span.
During that time, the Tigers went over five
minutes without scoring a basket.
Head basketball coach Lynn Hickey said she
thought that although the game had many posi
tives, it was no excuse for a let down.
"We were running the break better, going in
side better, plus doing a whole lot of little funda
mental things better, " Hickey said. "This week
end however is going to be another step up, and
we'll be involved in two games like our first one
(a 73-68 squeaker at Arizona State)."
A&M will host the Lady Aggie Invitational this
Saturday and Sunday.

blocking team.
"They have some really big
8 iris, so we're going to have to
it really smart," Kisling said.
"If we play smart, we can beat
them."
A&M head coach Laurie Cor-
belli feels there are three key
things to winning.
"We're going to have to play
'very disciplined," Corbelli said.
"We're going to have to make
adjustments as soon as possible
against their main hitters and hit
smart against their big blockers."
The Patriots are led by middle
hitter Virag Domokos who is
second in the nation in block av
erage (1.90) arid fourth' in hitting
percentage (.447). Setter Erin
Batcher is averaging 10 assists a
game.
"They know how to win, and
they are very athletic," Corbelli
said. "They're probably not as
athletic as the Texas team but
very similar to Houston.
"I'm expecting a lot of hard
hits and a real big net game. I
don't think the floor defense
game is going to be too pretty or
the ball handling."
Corbelli said she does not ex
pect to see anything different
from her team against the Patri
ots.
"We've tried about every
thing we can with our group,"
Corbelli said. "We know what
each player feels confident do-
ing.
"We might do a few different
things On offense that not too
many have seen on tape.
"Nothing really drastic,
though, because there is not a
whole lot more that we've prac
ticed that we've found has
worked well."

Edwards also said that
team is focused on Kansas Sta!
"I don't think we tookBu
nell serious as a team," Edw
said. "As a team, we need to
it up."
Bern said that there are oft
things at stake besides thebal
of the two guards.
"The bigger picture isb
they get their team to winl
game," Bern said. "I think Da;
is one of the top point guard:
the country and he will rise to
challenge."
Senior forward Damon Jot
son, who led the Aggies aga
Bucknell with 24 points andl
bounds, said that the team:,
prepared for a tough game.
"They are a good team and
very physical, but we're read;
Johnson said. "You have to
mentally prepared the same;
every game, but I definitelyfc
we are more focused than
were for Bucknell."
Johnson also said that the!
gies will be much improved
their low post defense, somett:
they had problems with in Sat:
day's 73-69 victory over theBisa
"We worked on it a lotdur:
practice yesterday," Johnsons;
"You will see a definite impro
ment on post defense fort
game."
Senior forward Brett Mu:
who Bern said had the bestr
season workout of any pla!
will miss his second strail
game with an aggravated. 1
flexor muscle. Bern added:
the injury is far more serioust:
originally expected and asa:
suit, a few of the Aggies'®
faces will get a chance tost:
their stuff while Murry heals.
"(Joe) Wilbert, (Roy) Wills;
(Anthony) Burks will be thro;
into the fire," Bern said. "It's;
ing to be live or die by that.
"It's something I don't like,:
that's what we have to do."

the corner. Rockets by two.
Me (jumping up from the
couch spilling my Saturday
Thanksgiving dinner): You see,
they're going to lose it. Manning
is going to get hot, and the Clip
pers are going to win by 20.
Dennis (picking Cranberry
sauce out of his hair): Come on
Dave, they haven't lost it yet.
Ron Harper swishes a three-
pointer. Clippers by one.
Dad: See, I told you they lost
it. While your picking that dress
ing up off the floor, see if you can
find my remote control.
Mom (mother): David, did
< you spill your Saturday Thanks
giving dinner?
Hakeem Olajuwon hits a turn
around jumper. Rockets by one.
Me (stepping in a puddle of
grape juice): Yeah, Mom. I'll
clean it up as soon as the game is
over.
Mom: All right, as soon as the
game is over. But I want my new
white carpet spotless when you
clean it up.
Dennis: Come on Dave, they
haven't lost it yet.
Loy Vaught steals the ball and
runs the length of the court for a
dunk. Clippers by one.
Me (punching the brick fire
place): Who in the world was he
throwing that pass too? The
Rockets couldn't beat a seventh
grade 'C' team. Change the
channel. Dad. I can't watch any
more of this.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
Jason (friend): We saw that
the Rockets were blowing their
lead so we came over to see how
bad Dave is hurting himself.
Rick (friend): Yeah, is he
bleeding yet? Don't tell me
we've already missed the good
parts.
Mario Elie nails a three-pointer
from the top of the circle. Rockets by
two.
Me (getting scalped by the
ceiling fan as I jump): All right,
we got the lead. Now all we
have to do is figure out a way to
lose this one.
Gary Grant drives for the lay-up.
Clippers by two.
Dad: Jason and Rick, when
you boys were walking in, did
you happen to see the remote
control in the yard? Did you
look on the roof maybe it was
there?
Dennis: Come on Dave, they
haven't lost it yet.
Me: Would somebody hit him
please. He's been saying the
same thing since this column
started.
Olajuwon with the turn around,
and the Rockets lead by two with
seconds to go.
Me (practicing acupuncturf
on myself): Ouch! Now watek
the Clippers hit a three-point®
from half-court.
Here we go. Mark Jackson is /
ing to throw the ball in for the Of
pers.
Mom (holding remote con
trol): Is this what you guyshav;
been looking for?
The official gives it to Jacksor
thank you
and he looks for
Thighmaster.
Mom (pushing the channel
button):Did you guys kno«
when I push this button a litt;t
red light comes on?
Me (spontaneously combust
ing): Boom!
Rick and Jason: Man that was ?
the best ever. Do it again Dave
do it again.
Dennis: Come on Dave, the;
haven't lost it yet.
