Page 4 The Battalion Wednesday, December 1, Middle East sees bloodiest day in Gaza since PLO - Israel accord The Associated Press KHAN YUNJS, Occupied Gaza Strip — Palestinians hurled rocks and burned tires Tuesday to protest the army's at tacks on PLO gunmen and the lack of progress in peace talks with Israel. Sol diers answered with gunfire, wounding 65 Palestinians. It was the bloodiest day of street bat tles since the Israel-PLO accord was signed Sept. 13. Hundreds of makeshift barriers blocked roads to enforce a three-day gen eral strike called by the Palestine Libera tion Organization. Clouds of smoke from burning rubber rose over the Gaza Strip. The violence reflected Palestinians' growing frustration over the lack of change and threatened to complicate ne gotiations on the handover of Gaza and Jerico on the West Bank scheduled to start Dec. 13. Still, two meetings held Tuesday re flected continued efforts toward peace. Maj. Gen. Matan Vilnai, the Gaza Strip military commander, met with five PLO leaders in Gaza to discuss a cease fire, and a top aide to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin arrived in Tunis for talks with PLO chief Yasser Arafat. In Gaza, the PLO leaders demanded that the army stop shooting Palestinians, stop hunting members of the Fatah Hawks, release jailed Hawks and reduce its presence in Gaza. The Hawks are the military wing of Arafat's Fatah faction. "We hope the bloodshed will be stopped. We have agreed on practical steps to solve the situation," PLO leader Sufian Abu Zaydeh said after the meeting. He would not give details. Rabin, who is touring Europe, sug gested the violence was part of a "war of nerves" to pressure Israel. "We must aspire to a calming be cause it is an important condition to continuing the negotiations," he told Is rael radio. Rabin said the army would press its campaign against armed vigilantes who try to derail the talks with attacks on Is raelis, but he appeared to be referring to Muslim militants and radical?: groups, not to the Fatah Hawks. The latest violence was triggered: the killing Sunday of a Hawk. Abu Rish, in Khan Yunis. Abu Rish had laid down his art and surrendered publicly last week, army sources said he was with a® men in a car when he was shot to de; by an undercover unit. His killing was viewed by Pakstr ans as a violation of a truce agreetne: arid Rabin and senior army comma- ders suggested it was a mistake. The Fatah Hawks, whose lead; Taisir Bardini was captured Monde announced they would resume ate against Israelis.
