PRO CON JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Sportswriter L ife after Tom Landry was not easy for the Dallas Cowboys, but to say that the 'Boys have not regained their stature as America's Team is ridicu lous. Yes. Can you believe it? Some poor souls continue to question that the 'Boys are back. Sure, the 'Boys will never be the same under the coaching of Jimmy Johnson as they were under "The Man in the Hat," but this change was not for the worse. By investing his hard earned $140 million. Cowboys' Owner Jerry Jones bought the right to do whatever he wanted to do with the 'Boys. That included hurting the feelings of some die hard Cowboy fans with the firing of Landry. Landry's enshrinement into the Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium two weeks ago brought back many good memories to the Cowboys' faithful. Landry deserves to be re membered as the coach who built the Cowboys' mystique. But is un fair to still harbor ill feelings for the Cowboys and Jones because of what he did to Landry on a sad Dallas night in Feb. 1989. People question Jones' commit ment to winning, obviously forget ting his actions to bring in extra tal ent and dumping off old baggage. From the start, Jones has not been See Ortiz/Page 8 WILLIAM HARRISON Sports Editor S o just what does it take to be America's Team? Well, Dallas Cowboys own er Jerry Jones and his coach Jimmy John son would like you to think winning is the bottom line. Strange. That's the same motto the Los Ange les Raiders chieftain A1 Davis used for his de cidedly irreverent, un-American Raiders: He said, "Just win, baby." Since Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys, he has fashioned a decidedly different America's Team than the one that original Cowboys owner Clint Murchison, general manager Tex Schramm and coach Tom Landry forged. The team's image was built by these original Cowboys and pirat ed by Jones, who has abandoned what the original organization stood for to its fans. Jerry Jones. He canned Tom Landry in 1989, and the news hit the media before Jones had the de cency to tell Landry in a simple phone call. Jerry Jones canned a coach that put together an unpar alleled run of 21 straight winning seasons before the coach's talent ran dry in a series of personnel mistakes and misfortunes, which were beyond the coach's control. Rush 77ic Battalion The Lady Aggie basketball team went international on Thursday night as they scored a 99-78 preseason victory over Vilnius, Lithuania. Texas A&M head coach Lynn Hickey said after the game that she was excited about the way that her team played in their first game. "A great, great effort," Hick ey said. "We executed extreme ly well and we shot the ball very well tonight." Hickey also said that the team was sluggish at times, but that the effort was there throughout the entire game. "We came out in the second half and hit sort of a dry spell," Hickey said. "But overall, it was a great effort by the whole team." The Aggies were paced by se nior forward Beth Burket who led all scorers with 20 points. Burket, who made nine of 15 shots from the field also grabbed 12 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Burket said that the depth of the Aggies' talent enabled the team to get into an offensive flow early in the game. "It's just a relief to see the teamwork we had out there," Burket said. "We weren't rely ing on certain people to do things and it was so much more natural. "Every time down there, a different person was sparking and that's what we need." Burket said that her own per formance was a much needed boost to her self-confidence lev el. "The way that I ended last season, I definitely needed this," Burket said. "I feel like I'm ready to do what this team needs from me." Freshman forward Marianne Miller had an impressive debut as she scored 15 points, includ ing two three pointers. She was perfect four-of-four from the field. Miller said that even though she didn't miss a shot, she said that she still had a case of the first game jitters. "I was scared, I was scared to death," Miller said. "Everybody on the team talked to me and re ally calmed me down. "They helped me out a lot." Hickey said that she was pleased with the freshman's ef fort and that she looks forward to her having similar nights in the future. "I think for a freshman and for her first night out against a physical team, she did very, very well," Hickey said. "I jumped on her a little about her defensive rebounding, but See Lady Aggies/Page 8 Kyle Bumett/The Battalion Aggie forward Marianne Miller tries to take a Lithuanian play er by surprise.
