Page 4 The Battalion Tuesday, November 16,19) Tuesday, No Health Tips Nightclubs, radio stations kick-off Great American Aggie Smokeout This year, the Great American Aggie Smokeout will kick-off Wednesday with a smoke-free night at the Texas Hall of Fame with KTEX 106.1 FM. But instead of stopping there, the Smokeout is expanding. On Thursday, Charlie's with Mix 104.7 FM, The Tap with KTSR 92.1 FM, Denim and Diamonds with Aggie 96 FM and Hurricane Harry's with KORA 98.3 FM will also go smoke-free. Volunteers from the Brazos Unit of the American Cancer Society, Eta Sigma Gamma, the Texas A&M Cancer Aware ness Society, Aggie REACH and other or ganizations will be present to help smok ers "kick a little butt" by handing out in formation with tips for smokers on trying to stop smoking as well as passing out T- shirts commemorating the event. Everyone entering the club will be asked to remain smoke-free for the night. If you are a non-smoker already, you can join the fun by adopting a smoker for the night, whether they are family, friend, or a co-worker, and encouraging them to quit. Non-smokers can also en joy a smoke-free night of dancing with out their eyes burning or having their clothes and hair smell like a chimney the next day. The Great American Smokeout is not just a local event. Thousands of organi zations and volunteers all over the nation are sponsoring events to promote the Smokeout. The smoke-out is found anywhere you find smokers along with people who care about helping them quit. So, if you are a smoker who keeps saying, "I'll stop to morrow," the Great American Aggie Smokeout is your "tomorrow." Quitting smoking is not just a matter of willpower. Learning and using new skills that will give you control over your smoking behavior. Three obstacles you must overcome to quit smoking are: your addiction to nico tine, the habit of "lighting up" and re lapse. Now is the time to quit smoking. Start with the following steps: • SET A QUIT DAY and stick to it. Reduce your smoking before the quit day arrives. Smoke only 1/2 a cigarette, and switch to a low nicotine, low tar brand. • PLAN AHEAD for how you will handle the tough times. Get support from family and friends. • BE CONFIDENT. If you believe you can succeed and quit, you will. • BEWARE OF TEMPTATION. No matter how hard you try, you can't avoid being tempted. The faster you recognize your desire for a cigarette, the faster you can react to the desire and avoid relapse. Withdrawal symptoms are caused by the psychological and physiological de pendence on cigarettes and may occur when a person quits smoking. With drawal may be intense the first couple of days, but declines sharply' after four days and symptoms are usually gone after the fourth week. The most important thing to remem ber is the symptoms are normal and they will pass. Some of the most common re ported withdrawal symptoms include: • IRRITABILITY - Withdrawal symptoms associated with trying to quit smoking cause most people tend to be come irritable. • INSOMNIA — Nicotine affects brain wave function and may influence sleep. You may dream about smoking and coughing may contribute to wakefulness. • COUGHING, CLEARING THROAT/NASAL DRIP, DRY THROAT — This is the body's way of getting rid of the mucous which has blocked airways and restricted breathing. A dry throat is the result of your body producing less mucous because it no longer needs to protect the airways as much as it did while you were smoking. • CONSTIPATION, GAS, and STOM ACH PAINS — These symptoms are caused by nicotine withdrawal which may slow down intestinal movement. • HUNGER — Craving a cigarette is often confused with hunger pains. Many ex-smokers find themselves eating more after quitting even though eating does not satisfy the craving they are feeling. Other withdrawal symptoms you may experience include food cravings, dizzi ness, lack of concentration, depression, tightness in chest and fatigue. Quitting is a positive health decision. The most important results may not be evident for months or years, but the ben efits of quitting can be felt right now. After you quit you will notice that food tastes better, your hair, house and clothes no longer smell like smoke, you save money, and you have increased en ergy. Quitting also make you look better, sets a good example for people around you, and most importantly, lowers your risk for lung cancer, heart attack, and stroke. It is not easy to quit smoking, but to benefits are well worth the effort. Call the American Cancer Society at 1- 800-ACS-2345 or the A.P.
