Smith The 1994 MSC Miss Texas A&M University Scholarship Pageant will be held February 19, 1994 DALLAS — Christopher Brosky's two convictions since March for his involvement in the racially motivated drive-by slaying of a black man have made the former skinhead an easy target for public outrage. But what protestors and prosecutors seem to have neglected is that Brosky has been the target of public attention and scorn though he was the least involved of the three people who killed Donald Thomas in June 1989, his mother said in an interview with The Associated Press. Little infamy has trailed gunman William George "Trey" Roberts III or driver Joshua Hendry. They both plea bargained, leaving Brosky, 19, to carry the case into the spotlight alone. "Now that it's become 'The Chris Brosky Case/ people have forgot ten this kid was in the back seat," said defense attorney Ernie Bates. "Even the participants disagreed whether he handled the gun or even said shoot." The way the case has been handled has outraged his mother, Sheilagh Brosky. "Don't you think it's a big responsibility for Christopher to carry, all the collective guilt for 160 years of inhumane treatment? That's exactly what has happened," Ms. Brosky said. "He is being held responsible for every injustice in this state since the Civil War. "The word I'm trying to get out is don't call it justice when it's not. Justice is portrayed as a woman wearing a blindfold to be impartial. Here in Texas she wears a blindfold so she can't see what's being done in her name." In March, an all-white Tarrant County jury convicted Brosky of mur der. Their sentence of 10 years' probation sparked widescale protests, including a 10,000-person march in Fort Worth. The outcry led Tarrant County prosecutors to seek a second conviction. Brosky was convicted last week by a Galveston jury for engaging in organized criminal activity. He was fined $5,000 and sentenced to 40 years in prison — the same number of years handed to Roberts. Brosky could be eligible for parole in three years and four months. Brosky's attorneys are trying to get the second trial considered dou ble jeopardy, which is against the U.S. Constitution. Their motion has been sent to the Texas Court of Appeals.
