MSC Council speaker
controversy continues
•If I have been understanding the recent
letters correctly, the College Republicans are
trying to organize a visit by Rush Limbaugh
to the Texas A&M campus and the MSC
Council is trying to do everything in their
power to prevent this from happening.
They claim that Limbaugh's views are too
controversial and one-sided, and they want
an opposing viewpoint to "balance-out"
Rush.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought
that college campuses have always been a
haven for controversial ideas and speakers,
but not, it appears, if the speakers are of the
conservative type.
These people are willing to blatantly defy
the First Amendment in the name of "open-
mindedness" and "fairness." This seems a lit
tle contradictory.
I think that this liberal section of the Uni
versity is scared to death of Rush Limbaugh
and the people who agree with him; there
fore, they go through great pains to try to
have them silenced.
If the MSC Council wants to have a
counter speaker, then why should this task
fall on the College Republicans in any way?
Could it be that the Aggie Democrats are just
not capable of finding anyone that even re
motely matches up with Limbaugh.
Bill Zerby
Class of '96
•To the MSC Council: for speakers to be
effective, they must present both sides of an
argument and use logical reasoning to refute
one side, while using the same consistent
logical reasoning to promote the other side.
The purpose of a university is to promote
and foster free thinking — not to have bal
anced and fair thinking. (If that was the case,
half of the liberal arts department would
have to go.)
After all, by that logic, for every capitalist
speaker brought to campus, we would have
to invite a socialist candidate. Who is going
to keep track of all these speakers?
There are so many diverse student orga
nizations (pro-life Aggies, pro-choice Ag
gies, NORML, Agnostics, Campus Crusade
for Christ) that if the MSC tries to bureau
cratically "balance" these speakers, it will
take any club on campus forever to get ap
proval.
The Aggie Democrats and the Gay Les
bian Bisexual Aggies co-sponsored a speech
given by Glen Maxey, D-Austin, earlier this
year, presumably promoting his political ide
ology. There is your balance.
It is not up to the MSC political forum to
"balance" out what the groups on campus
do. It is only their job to balance their own
program since they are funded by the Uni
versity.
Jennifer L. Hollingsworth
Class of'97
•Frank Brown claims the MSC "provides
skewed balance" by funding certain campus
groups. However, recognized student orga
nizations have an equal opportunity for
funding.
I am curious to know if College Republi
cans didn't bother applying for funds or if
they didn't submit any programming worth
funding. Also, if you are listing the funding
status for College Republicans and Pro-
Choice Aggies, why not inform the campus
about the funding for Aggie Democrats and
Aggies for Life? (Wouldn't that be a "bal
anced" reporting of the facts?)
And if it upsets you that recognized stu
dent organizations like Earth First!, Gay Les
bian and Bisexual Aggies, and the National
Organization for Women receive funding, I
invite you to establish at A&M an Earth
Last!, Straight Aggies, or a local chapter of
the National Organization for Men; this
would fix the "skewed balance" you imag
ine.
Frankly, Gay Lesbian and Bisexual Aggies
is NOT a political organization. GLBA's goal
is to provide services to the gay/lesbian/bi
sexual population on this campus. If you
want to verify the function of GLBA, Mr.
Brown, please feel free to attend the next
general meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18.

Brady Bill no threat to
constitutional rights
In response to Russell Holloway's letter
appearing in the Nov. 2 Battalion, I would
like to point out how outrageous his re
sponse to the open letter to Jason Sweeney
was. You stated in your letter that the Brady
Bill would do nothing but "chip away the
rights of Americans."
Have you ever heard the term "spirit of
the clause"? The spirit in which our founding
fathers created the right for you to carry a
gun was far from what they are used for to
day. We were given that right in order to be
able to create a militia (police). They did not
intend the thousands of handgun homicides
that oicur each year.
Dicjl you realize that in Houston along
there were over 300 homicides last years as
compared to four in all of England? The peo
ple in England have the ultimate form of gun
control. No guns. Period. If the five day wait
ing-period had saved a single life out of the
thousands of lives lost to guns every year in
tills country, wouldn't it be worth it? What if
that life was yours or someone you love?
Waiting five days isn't going to inconve
nience anyone with legitimate reasons to an
extent that would even come close to violat
ing your constitutional rights.
It's already been proven constitutional in
many states, so it's just your opinion that it's
taking your right to bear arms away. It's a le
gal fact that it isn't. I'm tired of hearing the
NRA say how evil gun control is while peo
ple are being shot in the drones on the streets
every day.

Advice to the lovelorn:
•I am writing in response to Christopher
J. Ligi's letter written Nov. 8. In it he slams
women who jerk him along in hopes of
maybe leaving their options open for some
thing better.
Dear hurt and confused, I would suggest
that you change your tactics. Start to use
lines like: "Well, I need to know by such and
such so I won't be left at home with my
thumb stuck up my butt," or simply ask fora
yes/no answer. It may seem like you're iso
lating yourself at first, but, trust me, it's a
good way to cut down on dead weight
(which can be very expensive).
John Staton
Class o/'93
•I would like to respond to Christopher
Ligi's letter regarding "women who jerk men
around." Because you are such a gentleman
(as I'm sure are your friends) you have prob
ably never met any "dishonest" men.
Well, I have. Through a big mix up, 1
arranged to go to the SMU football game
with a corps member (who will remain un
named). We met twice before the game for
intervals of less than fifteen minutes. We
arranged to meet for the football game at two
o'clock on Saturday.
As two-thirty rolled around, I realized I
was being "stood up." I called his room, and
his roommate answered commenting "he
probably forgot."
I have no idea what the reason for him not
meeting me was, though I think a phone call
would have been a nice gesture. I really did
not need a pity-party agreement and then a
dump.
This brings me to another point. You
must pick up all the wrong women. I agree,
there are a lot of men and women out there
dragging the opposite sex around in the dirt
by standing them up or not committing to a
date. However, there are many of us who
would be elated at the idea of going out for a
nice evening with a gentleman.
Please, don't stereotype all women to be
the scoundrels you have made them out to
be. There are lying men, women, children
and politicians in the world. However, there
are many beautiful souls out there waiting to
be discovered.
