Life without Michael. So now Charles, Ha keem, Patrick and Shaquille will all get their chance to win a world championship. But they'll have to do it in the most balanced league in years. 1. New York Knicks Strengths: The Knicks are still the number one defensive team and have the ability to shut down any team in the league. Weakness: They're only reliable scorers are Patrick Ewing and John Starks. Outlook: Now that Jordan is gone New York automatically becomes the favorite in the Eastern Conference. they need is to stay healthy and cut down on suspensions. 2. Houston Rockets Strengths: Hakeem Olajuwon and a quintet of three-point shooters. Weakness: Nobody rebounds well with the exception Olajuwon and Otis Thorpe which really showed in the playoffs last year. Outlook: If the Rockets keep their defensive intensity up the way they did at the end of last season, they will be the team to beat in the Western Conference. 3. Seattle Supersonics Strengths: Experience, depth and athletic ability at every position. See Winder/Page Face-off against Texas Volleyball team aims to burn touted Texas By Nick Georgandis The Battalion It's pay-back time. On September 15, riding a seven-match winning streak, the Texas A&M volleyball team marched into Austin to face arch-rival Texas. That night the powerful Lady Longhorns unceremoniously dumped the Lady Aggies in three straight games, proving that the Aggies still had a lot of room for improvement. "That was our first conference > LADY AG 1 game and we really weren't prepared for it, " A&M volleyball head coach Laurie Corbelli said. "It was early in the season, and maybe we were a little bit too nervous, and they took advantage of that." And now, eighteen matches later and wiser, the Aggies are looking for revenge as they square off against the nation's second-ranked Lady Long horns at 7 p.m. tonight at G. Rollie White Colise um. With a victory, the Aggies will move into a tie with the Longhorns for the Southwest Conference lead, with only Houston left to play for the remain der of the team's conference schedule. A&M can finish no worse than second in the conference, thus earning a bye in the first round of the SWC tourna ment. Since A&M and the second-ranked Long horns last met, both have been red hot. Overall, A&M is 16-2, Texas is 13-1, and neither team has lost a conference game since their first meeting. For the seniors on the team, this will be their last home game against Texas. Senior outside hitter Genny Wood said she thinks the contest will be a tremendous match-up. By William Harrison The Battalion A&M volleyball got a new coach this year, and a brand new atti tude. Head volleyball coach Laurie Corbelli has led a team that fin ished 19-17 overall and 3-7 in Southwest Con ference play last season to a 23-4, 7-1 record, in good position to grab its first NCAA tourna ment berth since 1986. Corbelli said that such major progress has been built by mak ing little steps and tak ing advantage of a team with a great heart. "Although I knew the team had talent, I didn't know what the team had inside, and now I know," Corbelli said. "What we've tried to focus on is ball control skills, a real quick offense, a precise defense and a new en thusiasm to the team. "Players have adapt ed beautifully to every opponent much better than I expected." Senior middle block er Amy Kisling said Corbelli delivered just what the team needed. "We needed a change," Kisling said. "We weren't playing the type of volleyball we could have played, and she brought us up a level."
