Ban on pregnant cheerleaders reversed The Associated Press HEMPSTEAD — Under threats of legal action and a loss of federal funds, Hempstead's school board has reversed its ban on pregnant cheerleaders. The policy change Monday night didn't signal any dramatic change of heart. Rather, trustees said, they were just trying to avoid a lawsuit. "The board believes that the federal government is wrong in robbing local communities of the power to deal with the incidence of unmarried students be coming pregnant," the board said in its resolution. Trustees on Sept. 28 voted to cut three pregnant students from the cheerleading squad. A fourth pregnant cheerleader had an abortion, which allowed her to return to the squad. But she has not yet done so. None of the three banned cheer leaders has sought to rejoin the squad. But the ban prompted the National Organization for Women to file a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education civil rights section. Austin NOW leader Hannah Riddering cited Title 9 of the 1972 Civil Rights Act, which says schools that receive federal money may not bar students from "any extracurricular activity on the basis of such student's pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy or recovery therefrom." At Monday night's meeting, Riddering warned the board it was jeopardizing federal funding by continuing to bar pregnant students or fathers-to-be from holding elected school office. Trustees, who said they didn't intend to violate federal law, adjourned into closed session and emerged with the resolution. Under its new policy, the board will consider each student's case individu ally. "But in no case will a decision be imposed upon a student if, after consultation with the district's attor ney, the decision would violate the law," the board's statement said. Place Your Ad In The Battalion Cali 845-2696 FORT WORTH - The model airplane company that unveiled a reasonably accurate version of the then-secret Stealth bomber says it's uncovered the Air Force's next generation spy plane. Using evidence that includes unusual vapor trails in Texas, un explained sonic booms in Califor nia and a reported sighting off the coast of Scotland, some aviation watchers have concluded that the Defense Department is testing a replacement for the SR-71 Black bird. That spy plane was retired from service in 1990. Tester Corp.'s new model, the SR-75 Penetrator, puts aerospace enthusiasts' speculation into a three-dimensional form, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in Monday's editions. An Air Force spokeswoman dismissed the company's theory. "No such aircraft exists," Maj. Monica Aloisio said. "Someone's making a lot of money off some thing, but it certainly is not an Air Force model or program." In an interview from his San Diego office. Tester product de veloper John Andrews told the Star-Telegram that he believes the new spy plane model is 70 percent to 80 percent accurate. The Rockford, Ill., model mak er has established a track record in making the defense community uncomfortable. In 1986, Tester released a rea sonably accurate plastic version of the then-secret F-117 stealth fight er. Although Testor incorrectly called it the F-19, its replica gave an early glimpse of the futuristic fighter two years before the Air Force officially acknowledged its existence. Andrews, whose research led to the early-version F-117 and the company's newest model, also scored in the late 1950s with a ver sion of the U-2 spy plane. Andrews said he complied with requests to keep the model off the market until the 1960 crash of U-2 pilot Gary Powers in the Soviet Union ended any need for secrecy. Tester's version of the new spy plane is actually two aircraft — the SR-75 and a companion craft, the XR-7 Thunder Dart. Andrews suspects that the Air Force intends to use the SR-75 as an airborne launching platform for the small er, faster Thunder Dart. Officials at Lockheed, which Testor identifies as the new plane's manufacturer, declined to discuss the subject.
