The pets have suffocated, frozen to death or been fatally crushed because of improper handling by the Fort-Worth- based carrier, according to the government agency. The deaths occurred when the airline was transporting thou sands of animals, an airline spokesman said Wednesday. The complaint, released this week, said at least five dogs and one cat had died unnecessarily because of airline fault. American could face a fine of up to $2,500 for each violation or possibly have its animal-carrying license cancelled, said Cynthia Eck, a spokeswoman for the Agriculture Department. The airline has asked for time to respond to the charges. A spokesman for American Airlines said he was certain the airline would be able to answer all charges. "We're sincerely disappointed by the allegations since we feel we have a very good record of trans porting animals," said American spokesman Gus Whitcomb.
