Kim Mitchell, A&M's all-time leading record-holder in blocks, has shared the applause in Lady Aggie
volleyball's 22-4 season, its best start since 1986. The Lady Aggies play at Rice tonight at 7 p.m.
Lady Aggies' senior middle blocker Mitchell plays
her way into the record books of A&M volleyball
By Andrew Tomczesyn
The Battalion
When senior middle blocker Kim Mitchell takes
the court tonight against Rice in Houston, she will
have an honorary title.
The Marshall native was named the Southwest
Conference Player of the Week after hitting a blis
tering .536 percentage for the week. Mitchell leads
the SWC in hitting, posting a .340 mark in all
matches and .420 in conference play and marking
her as one of the league's premier players.
SWC player of the week is just one in a long
line of awards that Mitchell has received in her
time at Texas A&M.
While she appreciates the recognition, Mitchell
insists she is not in it just to receieve honors.
"The awards aren't what I focus on," Mitchell
said. "I just want to work as hard as I can."
Mitchell is no stranger to tedious labor. She re
ceived her bachelor's degree in accounting last
August and will receive her MBA in May.
Mitchell said she feels her education is instrumen
tal to her future.
"Academics are very important to me, and do
ing well in school is my main goal," Mitchell said.
"What I do in school is what is, going to make me
marketable in the future."
Mitchell received the GTE Academic Excellence
Award in 1990,1991 and 1992. She also was a sec
ond team GTE Volleyball Academic All-America
in 1992.
Mitchell said that she thinks volleyball has
helped her with her academic life.
"Volleyball has taught me a lot of things like
teamwork, the value of working hard, and know
ing to stick to things and never quit," Mitchell
said. "I've been hurt a lot in my career and there
were many times I just wanted to quit, but my
teammates and my coaches always kept me going.
"In the same way. I've learned to give it that ex
tra effort in school."
Mitchell's additional work on the court shows
as well. She is the SWC's all-time career leader in
block assists and leads the league this season in
hitting efficiency.
Mitchell also ranks second in the conference in
blocking and she said she considers that a very
important statisitic.
"Blocking is what we need to do to be success
ful," Mitchell said. "Defense is very important to
me and the entire team. We can't be successful
without playing well defensively."

Leeland McElroy (34) eludes Baylor Bears' middle linebacker
Tony Tubbs (99) during A&M's 34-1 7 win at Baylor Oct. 1 6.
Freshman McElroy blasts into the
spotlight amid crowded backfield
By Matthew J. Rush
The Battalion
He has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game.
He has rushed for 410 yards. He has 171 yards receiving. He ranks
15th in the nation in all-purpose yards with 971.
No, it's not Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson. Texas A&M redshirt
freshman Leeland McElroy has become the Aggie Superman.
During Saturday's game against Rice, McElroy was the sole rea
son A&M had the ball for only one minute and 13 seconds during
the first quarter.
A&M offensive coordinator Bob Toledo said that he was angry
because the offensive unit could not get into the game sooner.
