Downtown
Continued from Page 1
downtown area almost obsolete.
"For a long time, this com
munity questioned the role of
the downtown area after the
building of Manor East and Post
Oak Malls and other strip shop
ping centers, and there was a
big decline in retail stores in
downtown," she said. "There
are a lot of people who have
some really fond memories of
the way downtown Bryan used
to be. They remember when it
was prosperous and busy. Our
goal is to help make it that way
again."
Some residents, however, are
worried about Main Street's
evolution Into an entertainment
district. Miller said.
"It is really funny because
some people say, 'Oh no! An
other bar on Main Street,'"
Miller said. "What these people
don't realize is that a bar or a
nightclub is a business. This is
not a moral issue. This is about
business and tax base. This is
something for the community.
It's about saving a historic
town."
T. C. Nguyen, owner of the
Stafford Opera House, said the
the Main Street area could be
the city's version of Austin's
Sixth Street.
"The transformation of Main
Street into the next Sixth Street
sounds very ambitious, but it
could happen," he said. "It
would be great if we could pull
off something like that. We
would need to get more people
to support it and open up busi
nesses, but it could happen "
Miller said that in order for
residents of all ages to enjoy
what Main Street has too!
the area must contain manydi:
ferent kinds of businesses, ur-
like Sixth Street.
"We don't want downtow
to be just like Sixth Street be
cause it is really only opens:
night," Miller said. "We wan:
Main Street to be busy af alS
times of the day and night
that's why wc have restaurants
theaters and retail stores in ad
dition to the nightclubs. Then
are things there that a 30-year
old would enjoy, and therear?
things that a 20-year-old would
enjoy."
Before Main Street came back
to two years ago, Texas A&' j
University students in searchc:
a live music venue had togoout
of town to see the acts the?
liked, Nguyen said.
"Years ago, students got the
idea that if they wanted to have
fun and go to a bunch of unique
clubs or see live music they had
to go to Austin or Houston," he
said. "When they go to these
other towns, they spend mone;
there and support the toca
economy of that town," he said
"We wanted to give these sti:
dents a reason to stay in tow?
and I think we have."
Nick Symanovich, a junior
biomedical sciences major who
frequents the area, said heisev
cited about the area's emergent
as a cultural district.
"It is the the most cultural 1
diverse area of Bryan-Colles
Station, that's why I like it,
Symanovich said. "T like the lo
cal music scene a lot and thisi ;
the only place 1 can catch it
"J also like being able to goto
one place and have four or five
different options for clubs," he
said. "I can go in one place arc
if I don't like it, I can go some
whore else without having to
drive all over town."
