Rollie White Coliseum. But it didn't happen on the court. Head yell leader Mark Rollins was the Aggie who turned in a record-break ing performance - breaking an unoffi cial record, but a record nonetheless. "Before the game started," Rollins said, "(the yell leaders) heard from some A&M officials that the UH coach (Bill Walton) wanted us to get on him." Rollins responded by leading the home fans in his favorite yell, "Sit Down, Bus Driver," an unofficial 34 times as Walton kept egging the crowd on. "I think we did our job because (Walton) seemed to be more worried about the crowd than the game," Rollins said. "We finally ended up stopping after one of the breaks." "Sit Down, Bus Driver" is one of a plethora of yells that Rollins can pick from, and his main duty is choosing the right one at the appropriate time. "It's really a judgment call," Rollins said. "I just try to do the yells that are the most cooperative to that stage of the game. I mean a yell like "Old Army" is not really conducive to getting the crowd loud." Rollins feels that getting the crowd See Winder/Page 6 Mary Macmanus/Tm Battalion A&M middle blocker Joni Keister (6) knocks the ball past Northeastern Louisiana in their 3-0 win last Saturday. Volleyball team ready for second challenge against Red Raiders By Nick Georgandis The Battalion The Lady Aggie volleyball team re turns to Southwest Conference action tonight as they travel to Lubbock for their second match against Texas Tech. The two teams squared off earlier in the season with the Aggies taking the vic tory 3-1. However, A&M sophomore middle blocker Joni Keister said she be lieves the Lady Red Raiders will present a more formidable challenge this time around. "I think they're going to be really up for us because we got them pretty good last time," Keister said, "so we need to get ready." Injured starting outside hitter Genny Wood's status is still questionable for tonight's game. Wood was injured in the third game of Saturday night's win over Northeastern Louisiana when one of the NLU players landed on her foot. The injury was diag nosed as a second degree ankle sprain. Danny Kniffin, A&M athletic rehabilita tion specialist, said it was not serious. See Spikers/Page 7 Youth, experience to clash as Aggie soccer team takes on SMU By Jose de Jesus Ortiz The Battalion The Texas A&M Lady Aggie soccer team will test its young team against Southern Methodist University today in Dallas, and A&M has a score to settle. In their two meetings last year, the Lady Aggies - then an NCAA non-schol arship team - were shut-out both times, 7-0 and 4-0. But A&M captain senior Rennie Rebe, who was a member of the 1992 team, said the Lady Aggies will have a better chance at winning this time. "We match up better woman for woman," Rebe said. "If each one of us does our role, we will win." Rebe said the Lady Aggies will con centrate on stopping SMU's top scorer, senior Kara Lee who has racked up 11 goals and five assists for a total of 27 points this season. With Lee and many other seniors, the SMU team (9-5) is loaded with experi enced players. A&M is on the other end of the spectrum with one senior and mostly freshmen. Texas A&M Aggies vs. Rice Owls Owl's solid running game not enough to put team's worries at ease By David Winder The Battalion After finishing with a tie for second place in the Southwest Conference last year, the Rice Owls (4-3, 1-2) have con tinued to improve and now have their sights set on a bowl bid. Not bad for a team who had to re place former running back Trevor Cobb, the Southwest Conference's all-time leading rusher, with untested sopho- more Yoncy Edmonds. "It may be a little to early to start discussing bowls," Rice head coach Fred Goldsmith said. "But if we win three of our next four games we should have a pretty good shot at it." ^ Rice quarterback Bert Emanuel said he is optimistic of the Owls' chances of playing their first bowl game since 1961. "We still have a good chance of mak- ■MM2---- ing it," Emanuel said. "We control our own destiny, it's in our hands." Both Goldsmith and Emanuel agreed that Rice would have never made it this far without the emergence of Edmonds who is currently third in the SWC with 719- yards rushing. "Yoncy is on a pace to break a 1000 yards," Emanuel said. "He's proven he's a capable tailback. He an- swered everybody's questions and ex ceeded expectations." The Owls' success in the running the ball has allowed the team to maintain a more balanced offense. "With Edmonds running the ball the way he has, we're on the same pace we were last year," Goldsmith said. "We don't have to have Bert Emanuel run ning all over the field on every play be cause of our running game."
