Dr. William L. Perry, associate
provost and dean of faculties,
sent a memo to all deans and di
rectors of libraries Oct. 5 remind
ing faculty of University policy
concerning what should be said
in the classroom.
"Some reports of the use of
classroom time by faculty to es
pouse personal religious view
points have come my way," he
said in the memo. "Such conduct
can have a negative impact on
some students and impede the
learning process."
"Respect for our students in
cludes being aware of the diverse
religions ascribed to, not to men
tion atheism or agnosticism," Per
ry said. "Espousal of individual
religious beliefs in the classroom
run counter to that respect.
"As a faculty member, we have
a responsibility to teach what is
listed as the course description in
the University catalog," he said.
The academic freedoms and re-
sponsibilities of faculty are
spelled out in the University's
Policies and Procedures Manual:
"Faculty members should
maintain respect for the student
and for the student's role as a
learner. Each faculty member is
entitled to full freedom in the
classroom in discussing the sub
ject being taught however, a fac
ulty member should be judicious
in the use of controversial materi
al in the classroom."

"To stand in front of a j

wrong, this is simply
a mix of church and
state. I guess some
people don't realize

"The bid is the guide of what
we will do if we get the confer
ence," Remmler said. "It's a
rough estimate of how things are
going to be."
Member schools within A&M's
region, which include Arkansas,
Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas,
will vote on the proposal.
The conference would bring
900 people from the Southwest
Conference, and the southwest re
gion of the National Affiliation of
College and University Residence
Halls to the Texas A&M campus
next November.
"The conference would be two
days of programming to see what
other schools are doing and to get
new ideas," McNulty said. "It
also gives the advisers an oppor
tunity to mingle and exchange
ideas."
McNulty said that A&Mi
benefit from the exposure oft
conference, as will local
and restaurants who will seet
nancial profit from the visi|
schools.
Remmler said the conferenl
would he a lot of work,
would also be a lot of fun foral’I
of people.
"We want the whole univeisil
to be involved," Remmlersai]
"This is definitely not restricted
on-campus students."
McNulty said the proposal!)
received a great deal of suppi
locally from both the administj
tion and RHA members.
Remmler said one of the ml
reasons the decision to inaketl
hid was made was because theil
cal RHA was so supportive an]
