G. RoIIie White Coliseum
CMA Horizon Award winner,
Mark Chesnutt, and Bryan's own
rising country star, Doug Super
naw, rocked G. Rollie White Coli
seum Sunday night with a flashy
mixture of hard-core honky-tonk
music, slow love songs and heart
breaking country ballads.
The opening act, Supernaw,
once again put on an energetic
stage show and got the audience
ready for some high volume coun
try music entertainment.
Supernaw performed his hit sin
gle "Reno" and new single release
"I Don't Call Him Daddy." He
also brought a group of Aggies on
the stage for the David Alan Coe
classic, "You Never Even Call Me
By My Name."
Chesnutt kept up the fast
pace, opening up with his rowdy
"All My Old Flames Have New
Names."
A native of Beaumont, Chesnutt
played many of his familiar coun
try hits including "Too Cold at
Home," "Your Love is a Miracle,"
"Blame It on Texas," and many
others. He also performed a num
ber of new songs from his current
MCA release, "Almost Goodbye,"
including "Sure is Monday," /; My
Heart's Too Broke (To Pay Atten
tion)," "Woman, Sensuous
Woman," and the title cut and cur
rent single, "Almost Goodbye."
The light show and musical per
formances kept the audience on its
feet the whole time. The house
lights came up as the audience
sang along to Chesnutt's "Brother
Jukebox" and faded low again for
his slow country love songs like
"Old Country. ' Chesnutt dis
played his acoustic guitar talent as
he sat on a barstool and played the
sorrowful ballad "I'll Think of
Something" and proved his vocal
talents as he sang a cappella the
heartbreaking "I'm So Lonesome I
Could Die." Towards the end, the

Bennett a Grammy award.
In "Steppin'," Bennett im
proves on classic showtunesol
the 30s and 40s, such as "Dancin'
in the Dark," "Shine on You;
Shoes," and "That's Entertain
inent." He pays special homagf
to Astaire with a medley off;
mous dance tunes, "You're Eas;
to Dance With," "Change Pari
ners," and Astaire's trademan
song, "Cheek to Cheek."
Just as he did in "Perfect
Prank/' Bennett again uses ill
jazzy accompaniments of tk
Frank Sharon Trio. The simp!:
piano-bass-drums arrangemen:
does justice to the classic tunei
without clouding Bennett's lyrics
"Steppin' Out" proves tha;
Bennett's voice has only gotten
better with age. His versionso!
"Top Hat, White Tie and Tails
and "I Guess I'll Have to Chanjs
My Plan" are exquisitely done
Bennett is one of the few artists
who can successfully remab|
these songs, which have been
played for nearly sixty years.
The well-crafted songs that As
taire brought forth on the silvet
screen are only enhanced in this
record. "Steppin' Out" is for any
one who has an appreciationol
classic showtunes and the music
of Tony Bennett.
