Alamo photo
proves oldest
taken in Texas
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - An
amateur photographer's stop 144
years ago for an obligatory shot of
the Alamo yielded what experts
say is the earliest datable photo
graph taken in the state.
Former Texas Gov. Dolph
Briscoe recently bought the 1849
daguerreotype photograph from a
rare books dealer in New Haven,
Conn., for $45,000 and donated it
to the University of Texas at Austin
Center for American History.
“It's nice to have it back in
Texas where it belongs/' Briscoe
said.
Center Director Don Carleton
said the photograph of the front
facade of the Alamo chapel is the
only known photographic view of
the structure made before its re
construction in 1850.
That year, the U.S. Army al
tered the Alamo's appearance in
several significant ways, includ
ing adding the curved gable at the
too of the church fac&dd.
