International learning project announced

made that Prairie View A&M
University and COMSAT Cor
poration will be joint partici
pants in a long-distance learn
ing project involving two
countries in Africa. Fields' co
sponsor, Edward Markey, D-
Mass., joined the representa
tive at the press conference
and gave a detailed outline of
how the learning project is to
be structured.
The project is named in
memory of Mickey Leland and
is designed to show the poten
tial of satellite telecommunica
tion and distance learning
techniques.
Dr. E. Dean Gage, interim
president of A&M, said the
specific benefits to the Univer
sity include allowing opportu
nities in education programs to
expand to international pro
grams, preparing students to
function in the real world and
offering students the chance to
get hands-on learning.

TCA to air Science Fiction channel
TCA Cable announced late
last week that it would begin
offering the Science-Fiction
channel to its customers, start
ing Tuesday at 6 a.m.
"The Sci-Fi channel has been
the channel most requested by
our customers," said Randy
Rogers, TCA manager. "I am
very excited about the addition
of the Sci-Fi channel to the ca
ble system."
The Sci-Fi channel will
broadcast over channel 31 on
the cable system. It takes over
the channel previously occu
pied by Headline News,
which moves to channel 13.

hopes to open the communication
lines between
students and
the administra
tion by carrying
on the long
standing A&M
tradition of
inviting fresh
men to lunch.
"Input from
students has
been valued for
a long time at
A&M," said
Southerland, who held his first
freshmen luncheon last week. "It
is important that all levels of the
organization at A&M receiveona
regular basis: information, ideas
and corrective criticism from the
students, who are the people re
ceiving services."
Southerland plans to hold a
freshmen luncheon once every
two weeks. He said he decided
to hold the luncheons as the inter
im vice president and not wait
until next semester because he
wanted to get their feedback
about the University.
"It is important because it af
fects freshmen who won't be fresh
men very long," he said. "Receiv
ing their reactions to A&M is im
portant. It is important to interact
with the freshmen and receive
their advice and input.
"I hope after the luncheons,
freshmen will feel it is possible to
approach faculty and staff at
University when they have a prob
lem or need assistance," he said.
Southerland recently ran an ad
vertisement in The Battalion ask
ing freshmen to notify his office if
they wanted an invitation to lunch.
He also invites freshmen to lunch
based on mother's clubs recom
mendations, word-of-mouth, and
from among cards freshmen filled
out at the MSC Open House.
