A&M netters head to nationals WA>
By Nick Georgandis
The Battalion
A&M tennis players Mark Weaver, Janine Burton-
Durham and Bernardo Martinez will take part in the
Sky tel National Intercollegiate Clay Court Champi
onships.
The matches begin today and end Sunday.
Weaver, ranked 14th in the nation, goes into the
singles tournament as the number five seed. A&M
men's tennis head coach David Kent says he believes
Weaver, a senior, has a shot at winning the tourna
ment.
"He's got a good chance and he's very good on
clay," Kent said. "He's played outstanding for three
years and during the off-season he worked hard and
really slaved to get into better playing shape."
Weaver will join Martinez, a junior to form the
fourth seeded doubles team in the tournament.
Weaver said he thinks their performance in the same
tournament last year will help them this time
around.
"Hopefully, this year we'll learn from our experi
ence last year," Weaver said. "Last year we lost in
the quarterfinals and we really felt like we should
have made it to the finals and possibly won it.
"Hopefully, we'll be in that same position and we
can win it all this year."
Burton-Durham, a senior, goes into the women's
singles field ranked 47th nationally but is unseeded
in this tournament. Lady Aggie coach Bobby Klei-
necke said he believes she will benefit from her rela
tive anonymity at the tournament.
"(The tournament) is a good opportunity for us,"
Kleinecke said. "There are only 32 people from
across the nation in the main draw. Since she's not
ranked in the top 32 in the country, it's the kind of a
situation where you can gain everything that you
can without losing too much in the process."

player by the name of Ed Dela-
hanty who led his team in bat
ting with a .368 average. Now,
one might say what does this
have to do with anything?
Well, aside from the batting
average, Len Dykstra,a most
valuable player candidate, has
scored 142 runs so far for this
year's Phillie team.
Delahanty finished with 145
runs scored and 37 stolen bases.
Dykstra has 37 stolen bases this
year.
Eerie, isn't it?
The 1893 Brooklyn Dodgers
finished 20 1/2 games behind
the league-leading Braves.
of > "
Regardless of who finishes
first this year, the Los Angeles
Dodgers are currently 20 1/2
games back with only five
games left to play.
The comparison of records
and league standings also
shows that the 1893 Braves fin
ished 43 games above .500 that
year.
Through Tuesday night's
play, the 1993 Braves were...43
games above .500.
Is that mindboggling?
The oddity of all of these sta
tistical events happening is sim
ply overwhelming. To have this
sort of thing happen, the odds
are probably around one in a
million, or better put, consider
ing the circumstance, one in a
hundred.
I guess it is true of what they
say. The more things change,
the more they stay the same.
Braves top Astros 6-3,

The Associated Press
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Atlanta

Glavine struggled to his 21st vic
tory.
Fred McGriff and David justice

hill hit a three-run homer to break
a 3-3 tie in the third.
The Colorado Rockies beat San
Francisco 5-3 Wednesday after
noon.
Glavine (21-6), a 20-game win
ner for the third straight season,
allowed all three runs and nine
hits in 6 2-3 innings.
