It would certainly seem
that "The Program" is all
about college football.
After all, the film features
what fans drool about in the
game - bone-smashing hits,
quick slashing runs weaving
impossibly through the heart
of a defense and "Mail Mary"
passes caught in the endzone
with no time remaining.
"The Program's" visual ef
fects are astounding; its pac
ing and action engage and
entertain the audience as the
fictional Eastern State foot
ball program rides a rocky
season, loaded with the big-
time pressures of a national-
ly-prominent football power.
Yet, a film that aims to
capture the essence of college
football misses the mark with
its heavy-handed morality
and lack of character devel
opment, selling the movie
short on fourth and inches.
At the helm of Eastern
State is head coach Sam Win

"A Bronx Tale"
Starring Robert De Niro,
Chazz Palminteri and
Lillo Brancato
Directed by Robert De Niro
Rated R
Playing at Cinema III
Craig Sheffer stars as Joe
Kane, the star quarterback.
The release of "A Bronx
Tale" marks the birth of yet
another film in the endless
list of Mafia flicks. But
thankfully, this one (written
by Chazz Palminteri and
based on his play) stands out.
Palminteri bypassed the
tired gangster story line and
with help from debuting di
rector, Robert De Niro, took
a fresh "slice-of-life" ap
proach to a story about a
young man and the choice he
has to make.
It's the turbulent 60s -
Francis Capra and Robert
De Niro star in "A Bronx
Tale."
%
protest and reform have
swept the nation - but in
Calogero's (Lillo Brancato)
poor New York neighbor
hood, the status quo still
reigns.
Delinquent youth hang
out on the street corner,
crime bosses run the street
and hatred for blacks lives in
tensely in the hearts of the
residents.
Calogero knows he must
eventually decide whether or
not to follow the hostile,
crime-ridden life his environ
ment encourages. And the
utter pain and ambiguity sur
rounding his choice is bril
liantly brought out by two
deep and complexccharacters
offering their advice.
Sonny (Chazz Palminteri),
a neighborhood Mafia man,
constantly encourages
Calogero to pursue a loftier
life than crime. Yet Calogero,
always in Sonny's presence,
witnesses Sonny brutally
seize power and wealth
through criminal mayhem.
And Calogero's father,
Lorenzo (Robert De Niro),
adamantly warns his son to
disregard any of Sonny's
preaching. As a poor, blue
collar bus driver, Lorenzo
distrusts Sonny's way of life.
Yet Lorenzo ironically
