Barone, A&M basketball team take it to the ''House' By Matthew J. Rush The Battalion The Texas A&M men's basketball team spent Saturday practic ing its free throws - but not just for the upcoming season. The Aggie basketball team and Brazos County law enforcement agencies participated in "Hoops for the House," a fund-raising event for Scotty's House. The University of Arkansas' Hilpert, the 17th-ranked player in the nation, knocked off four A&M players in a row to claim the title. Along with Martinez, junior Rico Rodarte and sophomores Ed Mar tinez and Blake Arrant all made the quarterfinals. A&M men's tennis coach David Kent said he was very pleased with the team's perfor mance in the singles competition. "We had some good singles wins; we probably did as good in this tournament as we ever have," Kent said. "This tournament is definitely something to build on." Despite finishing second, Martinez said he felt the tournament was a learning experience for him. "Playing in the finals is the greatest feeling," Martinez said. "(But) I didn't take advantage of my opportunities. "I had (Hilpert), I really did. But that's why he's ranked 17th in the nation. He takes care of the big points and those big points are always a difference." The A&M men's tennis team kicked off their 1993-94 season with the invitational, hosting the three-day tournament with players from Arkansas, Rice, Texas Christian and Texas Tech. There were 32 players competing in the singles division along with 16 doubles teams. The Aggies achieved their success in the tournament despite the ab sence of the team's number one player, senior Mark Weaver. Coach Kent explained Weaver's absence from the team's opener because Weaver would be needed for crucial tournaments later in the season, such as the Rice Tournament scheduled for November 12-14. "You can only play in four tournaments in the fall and we want Mark to play later on in the season so it will be closer to the duel match es," Kent said. "In the fall, the tournaments are more just for practice." The doubles semi-finals and finals scheduled for Sunday afternoon were called due to rain. The unseeded duo of Rodarte and freshman Chad Raymond were one of the four semifinalist teams and said they felt good about their play in the tournament despite its abrupt ending. "We played good considering it was only our first tournament," Ro darte said. Despite losing his first singles match, sophomore Eric Horan stormed back in the consolation bracket, winning three matches total on Friday and Saturday before losing to the tournament's number five seed, Willie Dann of Rice, 6-3, 7-5. Dann said he felt the Aggies would be a team to watch this season. "A&M is going to be solid," Dann said. "They gave us a real battle last year and I expect more of the same."
