State - and freshman Jerry Sny
der are the top male runners,
Marcinkiewicz said.
When Christner first arrived
at A&M Marcinkiewicz said he
had considered cutting him
from the team, but said that
Christner improved dramatical-
iy-
"I was ready to cut him after
his first year," Marcinkiewicz
said.
"Christner was terrible, but
he had a real strong work eth
ic."
As a redshirt freshman,
Christner traveled with the
squad only once. But last year,
he not only made the traveling
squad; he finished the season
ranked 15th in the SWC.
"I really want that (SWC)
championship ring," Christner
said, while pointing at his left
and right ring fingers.
"This finger is for my Aggie
ring; this other one is for my
championship ring."
A&M were not enough to over
turn the original suspension.
"The committee agreed will
the eligibility staff's decision,'
Williams said in a prepared state
ment.
"There was no information
that was submitted that warrant
ed a different result."
A&M interim President E
Dean Gage said he was dismayed
by the decision.
"We are disappointed, espe
dally for the young men and
families," Gage said in a prepared
statement.
"The University conducted a
thorough investigation into
situation and imposed appropri
ate penalties."
A&M head coach R.C. Slocum
said after practice Thursday!
he was prepared for the worst.
"1 view this from the stand
point that you do what you have
to do and we knew going
things might not go our way,’
Slocum said.
Hill and Cox both declined
comment on the matter.
A&M can appeal the Commit
tee's decision to a five-member
subcommittee of the NCAA
Council from fellow Division!
institutions.
University officials are unde
cided if they will pursue another
appeal.

give us the most trouble,"
Corbelli said. "But we expect
to be the favorites this week
end."
A&M beat Texas Tech
Wednesday for the first time
November 4, 1988, led by se
nior outside hitter Sheila Mor
gan, who hit 16 kills and
ranks seventh in the nation
averaging 5.19 kills per game.
Sophomore setter Suzy
Wente currently ranks twenti
eth in the nation with 12.02
sets per game.
Senior utility player Genny
Wood doesn't lead the Lady
Aggies in spikes or sets, but
rates high with Corbelli.
"Genny Wood is a very
good all-around utility play-,
er," Corbelli said. "She does
everything for us."
Wood totals 1161 digs for
her Lady Aggie career, fourth
best in A&M history, and
needs 15 digs for second place.
"I try to be consistent with
whatever I do," she said.
"I realize that this year
most of the attention will
probably go to Sheila (Mor
gan) or Suzy (Wente) - but I
mostly want the respect of my
coaches and teammates."
The Lady Aggies begin
play Friday against Alabama
at 1 p.m.; their next home
game is Saturday, October 2
against Texas-Arlington.

stands. All the fake stuff did
not end his career, of course, but
the way it ended is pitiful.
The Ryan Express should
have made its last departure
pitching at Arlington Stadium,
surrounded by cleanly-cut
green grass, fresh dirt and Texas
junebugs buzzing around the
paying customers eating real na-
cho cheese.
A country boy from Alvin,
Texas, should not have his final
appearance in a concrete dun
geon with a plastic playing sur
face.
But, it was not to be.
Seattle's Dann Howitt etched
his name in the record book
Wednesday night. The last bat
ter to ever get a hit off Ryan.
How fitting that it would be a
grand slam.
Of course, that slam allowed
Ryan to set another all-time
record, most grand slams given
up in a career. Just one more in
teresting tidbit to be included in
his biography when he is in
ducted into Cooperstown, the
home of baseball's Hall of Fame.
Hard work. Duration.
Amazing strength. Those are a
few adjectives that describe
Ryan's career.
Bad luck. Too old. Pain.
These are descriptive words that
sum up Ryan's swan song sea
son.
He spent 114 days on the dis
abled list due to assorted in
juries and sundries. It seems
like his Advil commercials
should have been rewritten.
"After pitching nine innings,
I take two of these and go on die
15-day disabled list."
But his injuries were no fault
of his own. They were nature's
way of telling a 46-year-old he is
not meant to throw 95 mile per
hour fastballs on a consistent
basis.
The saddest part of Nolan's
premature end is the Texas
Rangers are involved in a pen
nant race. They start a three-
game series with the Chicago
White Sox Friday night at
Comiskey Park with a chance to
make up some ground.
Imagine Nolan strolling out
to the mound, a cascade of boos
raining down (remember Robin
Ventura?) and Ryan casually
striking out the side. It will not
happen, but just the thought
should bring chills.
Memories are forever, like
Ryan's historic strikeout of Rick
ey Henderson to gain his
5,000th strikeout, his seventh
no-hitter, his 300th win and his
many seasons of registering 300
strikeouts.
So, Mr. Ryan this is a salute
to all the great things accom
plished by you in your illustri
ous career. Memories are de
fined by great moments; dreams
are left to ponder what could
have been.
God bless Nolan Ryan.
