Episcopal priests
conduct exorcism
DALLAS (AP) — An exor
cism was performed at the Epis
copal Diocese of Dallas' head
quarters after a series of illness
es started inflicting staff and
their families, church officials
say.
The exorcism from “all evil
spirits" took place Sept. 14 in
the form of a blessing of a build
ing, officials say.
Bishop James M. Stantion
said he did not dismiss the pos
sibility that the forces of evil
might be at work after several
people became ill, including
back injuries, asthmatic bronchi
tis and blood clots in the lungs.
The bishop and six other
priests and staff members con
ducted a 45-minute rite that
dates to the early Christian
church and is permitted under a
rubric, or directive, found in the
Episcopal Church’s “The Book
of Occasional Services."
Agency closes
waste facility
AUSTIN (AP) - Texas' en
vironmental agency on
Wednesday ordered a haz
ardous waste disposal facility
near Tyler to stop taking waste
until it can certify it's using
proper procedures. Officials say
it's an unprecedented action.
"This is historic," said Ken
Ramirez, deputy executive di
rector of the Texas Natural Re
source Conservation Commis
sion. "It's significant because it
assures that the correct proce
dures will be utilized and gives
the executive director the au
thority to keep the facility
closed until we know that's
true."
The commission is new, but
no predecessor agency had is
sued an order like Wednesday's,
he said.
The order involving Gibral-
ter Chemical Resources Inc, 10
miles northeast of Tyler in
Winona, can't exceed 90 days,
Ramirez said. But he said it
could be renewed if the compa
ny didn't certify that they have
correct procedures to properly
manage their waste.
The commission also is re
quiring the company to hire an
independent environmental con
sultant — with approval of the
agency's executive director - as
an on-site monitor, he said.
Another such consultant
must be retained to perform a
long-term environmental audit,
Ramirez said. He said approval
and discussion of the audit will
involve Winona residents.
Infant falls into
fish tank, drowns
AMARILLO (AP) - A 10-
month-old boy crawled into a
fish tank and drowned at his
home, where his mother oper
ates a day care center, officials
say.
Garrett McDuffee's drown
ing Wednesday was an acci
dent, police said.
Jacquelynn McDuffee was in
the backyard with other chil
dren when the boy, who was
just learning to crawl, fell into
the fish tank cm a bedroom
floor. Mrs. McDuffee found him
floating in about 4 inches of wa
ter, police said.
Garrett died at 5:30 p.m. at
Northwest Texas Hospital.
