Demjanjuk greeted with hostility
Man without a country waits for appellate court decision
The Associated Press
NEW YORK - Ann Spicer
stood a few rows behind John
Demjanjuk's airline seat and
slapped the blue tattoo inside her
left arm, her identification num
ber from the Auschwitz concen
tration camp.
"He has his life, his family and
will be allowed to see his grand
children. My children don't know
what it means to have grandpar
ents," she said, horror and sad
ness mingling in her face as she
stared at him.
The outbursts prompted the
Demjanjuk family to keep him in
a protective cocoon throughout
his flight from Israel early
Wednesday, blocking access by
reporters. And he wore a bullet
proof vest.
"He feels that he is guilty of
nothing, that he has been convict
ed of nothing, so it bothers him,"
said John Jr., 28.
Demjanjuk, who spent 71/2
years in Israeli jails, arrived in the
United States to an uncertain fu
ture.
Israel's Supreme Court over
turned his conviction and death
sentence on war crimes charges
that alleged he was a brutal Nazi
concentration camp guard known
as Ivan the Terrible. Demjanjuk
maintained he was a victim of
mistaken identity. The court said
there was enough doubt to over
turn the conviction.
The 73-year-old Ukrainian-
born Demjanjuk is no longer a citi
zen of any nation. He was allowed
into the United States pending a
federal appellate court review of
his case.
"For John Demjanjuk it will
never really be over," said Ed
Nishnic, Demjanjuk's 36-year-old
son-in-law and the family
spokesman.
A decision in the review by the
6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
could take a month.
Attorney General Janet Reno
has vowed to pursue Demjanjuk's
deportation on grounds that he
had concealed helping the Nazis.
The Justice Department plans no
action until Demjanjuk completes
his appeals through the 6th Cir
cuit, spokesman Carl Stern said
Wednesday.
The process could take months
or even years.
"My blood is coagulating,"
said Spicer, a Los Angeles resi
dent who was a toddler when she
was deported to Auschwitz in
Nazi-occupied Poland in 1944.
"It's been so many years but
the wound is still open. There
isn't a day in my life that I don't
remember," Spicer said.
"Murderer!" 70-year-old
Moses Korotki screamed when
Demjanjuk stepped aboard.
"He's a killer. Now he's a
celebrity," Korotki said, tears
welling in his eyes as he recalled
his ordeal in the Mathausen con
centration camp.
Demjanjuk sat at the front of
the business class section. Rep.
John Traficant, D-Ohio, sat next to
him, with John Jr. behind and
bodyguards in nearby seats.
