True Romance,’ a crazy, sew film; no! your typical romantic Hick
By Jacqueline Ayotte
The Battalion
"True Romance"
Starring Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette,
Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt
Directed by Tony Scott
Rated R
Playing at Cinema III
If all romantic comedies were clumped
together forming one huge puzzle, "True
Romance" would be the single jagged
piece that doesn't seem to fit in anywhere.
It's got romance, but not in the tradi
tional sense.
It's a crazily sexy film with stinging wit
coming from an array of fine actors like
Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette,
Christopher Walken, Bronson Pinchot,
Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman and Chris Penn.
But, it has an unbelievable amount of in
tense violence that makes you realize
"True Romance" is not exactly your typi
cal romantic comedy.
Slater plays the young, courageous and
lonely Clarence Worley who meets the
wild and gorgeous Alabama Whitman
(Arquette) while watching a kung fu
movie by himself.
The two lonely creatures fall in love in
stantly and get married the next day.
But they don't get a chance to live
happily ever after.
In an attempt to defend his new wife's
honor, Clarence commits a crime and un
intentionally steals a suitcase full of co
caine from a deadly Detroit mob boss
played by Christopher Walken.
After realizing they're in possession of

contraband, they flee to Los Angeles
where they plan to sell the goods and dis
appear.
It's when their plan fails that the film
begins to pick up a nice suspenseful 100
mph pace.
Impatient drug dealers and tough
gangsters are on the newlyweds' trail
with the police following behind. The
whole chase winds up becoming an obsta
cle course full of shooting, killing and
fighting. Yet, with these two sharp-witted
lovebird criminals, the violence only adds
zest to their modern romance.
Slater flawlessly plays the part of
Clarence, creating the perfect image of a
lonely fool in love. Arquette's lively char
acter allows her talent to finally shine on
the big screen.
As for the rest of the cast. Brad Pitt and
Gary Oldman stand out above the rest
with their impressive way of playing ex
tremely off the wall characters.
Pitt's portrayal of a lazy druggie col
lege roommate will impress you so much,
you won't believe it's him behind that
long hippy hairdo.
Goldman's hair is also long, but he
adds dreadlocks, a Jamaican accent and
vulgar language to make his repulsively
impressive portrayal of a dangerous De
troit pimp even more intensifying.
Every scene comes equipped with ei
ther violence, wit, grotesque humor or the
inevitab>le healing power of true passion.
"True Romance" may not be typical or
predictable, and it may not portray ro
mance in the way most films do; but, it's
this emergence from the norm that makes
"True Romance" truly extraordinary.

"Undercover Blues"
Starring Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid
Directed by Herbert Ross
Rated PG-13
Playing at Schulman VI
Finishing last weekend in a close sec
ond place behind "The Fugitive," in ticket
sales, the new MGM release "Undercover
Blues" blends a perfect mixture of laugh
ter, romance and suspense.
Kathleen Turner ("Romancing the
Stone") and Dennis Quaid ("Postcards
From the Edge") play witty and innova
tive 90s spies, Jane and Jeff Blue. This
husband and wife team, however, is not
just your typical professional duo. They
are also the doting parents of a
nine-month-old baby girl played by
Michelle Scbuelke.
While on an extended maternity leave
enjoying the jazz sounds and Cajun fla
vors of New Orleans, their expertise and
talent as spies is demanded to recover a
stolen weapons shipment and stop an in
ternational terrorist ring.
So what does the couple do? Of course,
they take on this challenging mission, and
bring their new baby along, too. The result
is two hours of entertainment and fun.
Turner as Jane Blue has once again
found a role to match the comedy and
spunk of her previous character, Joan
Wilder, in the hit comedy "Romancing the
Stone." 0 Quaid as Jeff Blue shines in one of
his strongest screen performances to date.
Jeff's confidence, egotistical nature and
natural charm add to the appeal of his
character. Jane, the professional investiga
tor/perfect wife lights up the screen with
her good looks, intellect and charisma.
New Orleans serves as the backdrop
for this comedy-romance. The couple
chases bad guys and enjoys quality family
time in such historic sites as the Audubon
Zoo, the famous French Quarter, the eeri
ly alluring Lafayette Cemetery and the

weathered Napoleon, one of the city's
oldest existing taverns.
"Undercover Blues" should not be tak
en seriously to be enjoyed. The film
brings together a funny mixture of "James
Bond Meets The Thin Man" with a
smidgen of "Home Alone" bad guy
abuse.

Directed by Russell Mulcahy
Rated PG-13

Rock video maker turned feature film di
rector, Russell Mulcahy, has made quite a
bold move with his latest criminal caper, "The
Real McCoy."
Leaving behind his earlier male dominated
flicks ("Highlander," "Ricochet"), Mulcahy
steps up with the neo-feminist 90s and creates
a film with (gasp!) a woman in the lead role.
Kim Basinger ("9 1/2 Weeks," "Batman")
plays the pivotal character, Karen McCoy.
And thankfully, she's hardly the whimpering,
