Parsons Mounted Cavalry celebrates 20th year
By Heather Winch
The Battalion
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Parsons Mounted Cavalry
(PMC), an elite group of Texas A&M University cadets who serve as
the only mounted ROTC unit in the United States.
The cavalry was founded in September 1973 and is named after Col.
Thomas Parsons '49, the 1973 corps commandant.
The cavalry had 27 members when it began and has since grown to
63 members consisting of sophomore, junior and senior cadets in the
corps. Membership is open in the fall to all sophomore cadets, male or
female, who have shown interest in the program and have maintained
at least a 2.25 GPR.
"Being in the cavalry teaches you responsibility," said Sam Williams
'89, a former cavalry member. "You are in control of a lot of things.
You care for horses, feed them and doctor them. You learn to fend for
yourself and a lot of the money comes out of your own pocket for re
pairing fences and other things."
In 1973, PMC members had to supply their own horses and equip
ment and pay as much as $300 in dues a semester. School funding of
