Soccer takes tops in St. Edward's tournament The Lady Aggies Soccer team raised their record to 3-2 after grabbing the title in the St. Ed ward's Tournament this week end. After defeating the University of Texas and TCU, the the team soundly defeated host St. Thomas with a 5-0 shutout - four of those points being scored in the second half. Head coach G. Guerrieri said the team demonstrated "a lot of poise" the second half and made an "unbelievable" turnaround from the first half. Leading the attack, freshman midfielder Allison Buckley made two goals and assisted one. Freshman forward Kristen Koop and junior forward Anna White- head also contributed to the win with a goal each. Freshman forward Yvette Ok- ler made the only goal in the first half with the assist from Buckley. The Lady Aggies will take on Arkansas - Little Rock on the TCU campus in Fort Worth next Thursday. Spikers take Norman The A&M volleyball team controlled the courts of Okla homa this weekend at the Sooner Invitational. The Lady Aggies dominated the tournament with wins against Ole Miss, Southwestern Missouri State University, and OklahomaUniversity. A&M took only four games each to win all of their matches in rout fashion. The Aggies improved their record to 7-1 on the season. They battle the Texas Longhorns in Austin on Wednesday. Three A&M players: setter Suzy Wente, middle blocker Amy Kisling and outside hitter Sheila Morgan w'ere named to the all-tournament team. Morgan was awarded most valuable player of the tourna ment for the Aggies. Trying to overcome both addictions is the main reason why most smokers who decide to quit, fail. If you've made the decision to quit smoking, you may need help in relieving your physical craving for nicotine, while you learn to overcome your mental addiction to smoking. A product is being studied for a limited time as part of a large national research study of smokers who have decided to quit. For only the next few weeks you can take part in this important study by purchasing the product at: Stop Smoking Study Center N.O.I Corp., 110 Lincoln Ave., Suite 109 (Behind Red Lobster) 696-2373 IRVING — Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson, addressing a problem he can do something about, said Monday he is bringing eight placekickers to Valley Ranch to find a replacement for Lin Elliott. Elliott missed two field goal at tempts, including a 30-yarder in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the the Buf falo Bills. Asked if he had fired Elliott, Johnson said, "I'll make a decision tomorrow. Elliott has had a year and a half to compete for the job. Nothing is resolved but I'm going to look at eight kickers with (kick ing coach) Steve Hoffman." Elliott, who missed a field goal and an extra point in an opening 35-16 loss to Washington, said af ter Sunday's game, "I dug my grave. In practice I do well. On Sunday, I struggle. I've let my teammates down." Johnson wouldn't name the. kickers who were coming to try out but the list was expected to in clude Matt Bahr, Eddie Murray, Jim Breech and Rich Andrews. "We might lose something on kickoffs because Lin had been do ing that well so we'd have to ad just our coverages," Johnson said. The other problem, unsigned All-Pro running back Emmitt Smith, is something Johnson can't do anything about. j® "We just have to understand who we are," Johnson said Mon day. "We're a different team than the one who went to the Super Bowl. I still think we will get into the playoffs. We just can't sit around and depending on Emmitt Smith being with us." But there's a hole in the dress ing room wall courtesy of defen sive end Charles Haley. It symbol izes the frustrations and near-re volt of the Cowboys players who feel they can't defend their Super Bowl championship without Smith. "We'll never win with a rookie running back," said Haley, who imbedded his helmet into the wall. "We need to either get Em mitt here or they've got to get rid of him." "There's a huge cloud hanging over this team," safety Bill Bates said. Troy Aikman was forced to pass 45 times and was intercepted twice in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills because rookie Der rick Lassie couldn't produce on the ground like Smith did in the Super Bowl. The Cowboys have started 0-2, a position from which no team has ever won the Super Bowl. "In the past," Aikman said, clipping his words, "we've had success being a balanced football team." Owner Jerry Jones wrung his hands and sat on his wallet. "I don't want to jeopardize the future of this team," Jones said. "I'pn frustrated and so is Emmitt. I understand the players being frus trated. While everyone has an opinion, we have opinions that are sound ones for the future." Smith wants $4 million per year — in line with what Buffalo's Thurman Thomas makes — wh’le Jones has offered $2.5 million. Thomas said after Sunday's game, "I don't know how the Cowboys can expect to get back to the Super Bowl without Emmitt Smith. They just can't do it. Em mitt would have made a differ ence against us today. In the Su per Bowl, they controlled the ball with Emmitt. They didn't do that today." Lassie, who helped Alabama win a national championship, wonders what kind of hornet's nest he has stepped on. "It bothers me when one of my teammates says something bad about me," said Lassie, who lost a fumble and gained 52 yards on 19 carries. Defensive back Kenny Gant said nobody should blame Lassie. "It's not fair to knock him/' Gant said. "He's a heck of a run ner. We're just not getting a break." Offensive tackle Nate Newton said the Smith contract question is tearing at the team. "You keep seeing on film all the big plays Emmitt made for us last year," NewYon said. "I'm for burning last year's film. I'm tired of talking about Emmitt." "Two wee^ ago, people were talking about us like we're a dy nasty," fullback Darryl Johnston said. "Now they talk like we're all done." Harrison Continued from Page 5 Buffalo too much. Or kickers. • And speaking of Oilers, how about all of the starved Houston fans who have yearned for a sound Houston victory over a team with Super Bowl talent. And Dave Kreig. The fans were promised a con test against the NFL's best quar terback of all-time, Joe Montana, but instead got Kreig, the best tumbler in NFL history. Howev er, I think any Oiler fan would be pleased with a 30-0 win, or any win for that matter. • 1 just knew bad things were awaiting for the Aggies when f caught a Florence Henderson- Ralph Emery duet on the Nashville Network the night be fore the game. It's not natural. • And as I was on the side lines taking pictures during the Oklahoma game, I couldn't tell who was in worse shape with the humidity and the 105 degree heat on the field: Reveille or a large, sweaty man about 20 rows up. They were both sitting with their tongues hanging out, spittle rolling down their chins and panting. But at least Reveille was the only one without clothing. • Lee Corso Update: ESPN announcer Corso, who did not rank A&M in his preseason top 25, chose to exhibit a cheesy smirk when commenting after the Oklahoma game, "-But A&M is still a good football team.. .(dramatic pause)" A clarification to Mr. Corso: your alma mater Florida State may at this moment be the na tion's number one team, but you will always remain the nation's worst college football analyst. Besides, Corso, what if the kick goes wide right.. .again. • How come it rains a day af ter the weekend, and I'm stuck in the Battalion newsroom instead of playing mud football? I guess it's the same reason that after nine months, the NCAA finally decided to release the A&M eligibility decisions at 5:00 on a Friday afternoon before Saturday's shell-shock at Nor man. • Just had to remark about a quote I read in the paper from Denver Broncos head coach Wade Phillips, "Sports writers are a lot like diapers; they both need to be changed every once in a while - and for the same rea sons. • See, I've got this theory about NFL Super Bowl con tenders - and it has nothing to do with this NFC being more pow erful than the AFC nonsense. It's in the names. It's why the Oilers will be contenders this year with a guy named Wilber, not just that it's Wilber Marshall. It's why the Giants were champs with Beasley Reece and chumps without him. And have you noticed that the Broncos haven't been any good since Rulon Jones III retired? Or maybe it's that I'm confus ing myself with John Madden again. • Steady yourself: Raycom football is back this week. You've never heard a sports cliche murdered brutally over the air until you've heard Raycom's "Smaish-mauth football" com mentary. But maybe the broadcasters will get the players' names right this week. On Saturday, ABC had problems telling who was on the field: A&M's Rodney Thomas or Oklahoma's James Allen. It is tough telling people apart with different numbers on different teams. • And finally a quote from the New York Giants' Lawrence Taylor which adorns the Battal ion office adjacent to the "Smaish-mauth" sports desk: "He doesn't see you coming and you drive your helmet into his back so hard, he blows a little snot bubble." And that's Lawrence Taylor - football's official decongestant.
