see more housing in the area," Caldwell said.
"There hasn't really been a lot of housing built
since the '80s."
An article in Money Magazine in 1991 listed
Bryan-College Station as the third most livable
area in the United States.
Harwell said the article was one of the fac
tors contributing to the recent growth.
"That article at least gave people an idea
where we are," Harwell said.
Hazleton said this article may have given
Bryan-College Station publicity, but it proba
bly didn't make people want to move here.
He said 2,000 or 3,000 people have been
added to the Bryan-College Station labor force
since last year.
Three new restaurants opened in down
town Bryan this summer, and many business
es expanded.
"We've had an explosion of business in
downtown Bryan," said Elizabeth Miller, man
ager of the Mainstreet Project in downtown
Bryan. "Since January 1992, we've had $22.3
million worth of investment by the private sec
tor in the downtown area."
Miller said this growth can be attributed!
incentives and a desire to appeal to students,
"We have a loan program that helps buj
nesses get started," Miller said. "There'sart
newed interest in the downtown area."
"A lot of businesses are interested in cap
tunng the student market," Miller said.
Hazleton said he sees the Bryan-Colleji
Station area continuing to grow.
"But it will be a controlled growth," Har
well said.
Hazleton said, "In the '80s, the Universilt
grew so rapidly. Now that is no longeroo
curring."
