This Saturday, the Aggies will finally have a chance to sink their teeth into a respected op ponent. A big win would justify the number five ranking, would shut up ESPN's Lee Corso, and would prove once and for all that A&M is a team to be reckoned with on a national ba sis. Just one problem. The Aggies will be facing the 17th ranked Oklahoma Sooners at their place with a television audience pro vided by ABC. The Sooners will be led by a hot quarterback, senior Cale Gundy, who thrashed TCU last week end with 246 yards and a hotter head coach. Gary Gibbs has said recently that A&M has been guilty of negative re cruiting and cheating. I guess when he said that he forgot about those small incidents concerning guns and drugs in Soonerland a few years ago. Maybe they have cleaned up Okla homa but not to the point they can beat the University of Texas. A&M's biggest concern on Satur day will not be Gibbs and his at tempts to save his job through the press. It will be the Oklahoma of fense. When Gundy gets rolling, he is very hard to stop. The history of these two teams is well-established, but Gibbs accuses A&M of negative recruiting See Page 8 not between each other. With a mutual nemesis in the Universi ty of Texas, the two teams have only met a total of 12 times in nearly 100 years of collegiate play. The Aggies have posted a ca reer 5-7 record against the Sooners and are trying to break a dismal 1-6 record at Memorial Stadium in Norman. However, in the last meeting in 1951 the Aggies did post a 14-7 victory at College Station. A&M's 1993 schedule fea tures a tough opponent in Okla homa at the expense of weaker traditional contests against smaller schools. Head coach R.C. Slocum said that when the opportunity to play Oklahoma presented itself, he felt the matchup would be a better challenge for his team. "I thought it would be good for us/' Slocum said.
