Highway 6 frontage roads
to undergo construction
By Jan Higginbotham
The Battalion
Highway 6 frontage roads are scheduled to un
dergo a face-lift in the coming weeks with construc
tion beginning Sept. 7 to convert the roads to one
way traffic.
Denise Fischer, public affairs officer for the Texas
Department of Transportation office in Bryan, said
the reason for the conversion is safety.
She said the frontage roads along that stretch of
Highway 6 see an average of 138 accidents per year.
"When the whole thing was built, it was under
stood that the conversion would eventually be
made," Fischer said.
The conversion is set to occur in three segments.
The first phase begins Sept. 7 and will include the
conversion of frontage roads from FM 2818 to Mar
tin Luther King Boulevard.
Work will start Sept. 13 on the second section
from Martin Luther King Boulevard to University
Drive (FM 60).
The final segment starts Sept. 20 and will include
the conversion of roads from FM 60 to Rock Prairie.
The entire project is expected to be complete by
Sept. 24.

"It has been a great 20 years,"
he said. "But there comes a time

Fischer said the Texas Department of Transporta
tion will take precautions to help motorists adjust to
the changes, although during the transition people
will be inconvenienced.
Arrangements have been made with Bryan and
College Station police to schedule extra patrols along
the frontage roads to ease the transition for mo
torists.
Merchants along the frontage roads said they an
ticipate few 7 problems.
A local car dealership is attempting to avoid po
tential problems by building its own feeder road be
hind the business.
Tim Light, of Tom Light Chevrolet Company,
said construction on his feeder road has already be
gun.
The road runs directly behind the dealership and
joins FM 158.
Light said the road is being built so customers
will have an easier way in and out of the dealership.
Danny Johnson, of Bossier Chrysler Dodge Jeep-
Eagle Inc., said he does not expect the conversion to
have any affect on business at all.
"The only problem we foresee is the increase in
traffic on the side roads," Johnson said.
