Journalism professor receives national award
Kyle Bumctt/Thc Battalion
Dr. Marilyn Kern-Foxworth and her AEJMC award for excellence in teaching, public service and research.
By Jennifer Kiley
The Battalion
Dr. Marilyn Kern-Foxworth,
associate professor of journalism
at Texas A&M, was honored this
summer by the Association for
Education in Journalism and Mass
Communication (AEJMC) with
the 1993 Kreighbaum Under-40
Award for excellence in teaching,
public service and research.
Representatives from the asso
ciation's teaching, research and
professional freedom committees
decide each year's recipient.
Kern-Foxworth is the first black
recipient of the award.
Jennifer McGill, a spokesper
son for the AEJMC, said Kern-
Foxworth's overall performance
in the judging categories — teach
ing, public service and research -
was extraordinarily high.
Kern-Foxworth, whose re
search has been published in
professional and trade publica
tions, said she believes her exten
sive research on blacks in adver
tising was a large factor in her
winning the award.
Dr. Charles Self, head of
A&M's journalism department,
agreed and said Kern-Foxworth's
research is groundbreaking.
"She has made a real impact
in the journalism field with her
research on diversity and inclu
siveness issues," he said.
Kern-Foxworth is also in
volved with Fish Camp, the Uni
versity-sponsored freshman ori
entation program.
Kern-Foxworth, who received
her doctorate from the Universi
ty of Wisconsin-Madison, said
the award is especially important
to her because it shows she has
succeeded at a young age and
will continue to succeed.
She recently completed her
first book, "Aunt Jemima, Uncle
Ben and Rastus: Blacks in Ad
vertising, Yesterday, Today and
Tomorrow," which will be re
leased later this year.
Kern-Foxworth has received
more than 35 other awards and
distinctions, including being the
first female and the first black to
recive the Pathfinder Award for
Scholarly Research in 1988.
Mosbacher decides against governor's race
The Associated Press
HOUSTON — Republican Rob Mosbacher,
saying he won't run for governor next year,
Monday declared the GOP primary all but
over and unannounced candidate George W.
Bush the winner.
Mosbacher, a Houston businessman, had
considered seeking the GOP nomination to
challenge Democratic Gov. Ann Richards. But
he said he didn't want to run a tough, expen
sive race against his longtime friend. Bush.
His announcement came after a 11/2-hour
meeting with Bush in Houston.
"While I'm convinced ... that I could have
beaten George., George is convinced that he
could have beaten me," Mosbacher said.
"And the only thing that is absolutely clear
is we would have spent a lot of money and a
lot of time trying to prove it. And that's money
that could be better spent on retiring Ann
Richards."
Bush, who has not made public his political
plans, left Mosbacher's downtown office with
out speaking to reporters.
But Mosbacher said there is "no doubt in
my mind" that Bush will seek the Republican
gubernatorial nomination.
Karl Rove, a political consultant for Bush,
called Monday's meeting part of the process
Bush is going through in deciding whether to
run.
"He's not a candidate today, but I don't see
anything that's going to keep him from becom
ing a candidate,” Rove said.
With strong name recognition as son of for
mer President Bush and managing partner of
the Texas Rangers baseball team. Bush has
been viewed as a top contender to try and beat
Richards, who already is planning her re-elec
tion bid.
Mosbacher, son of former U.S. Commerce
Secretary Bob Mosbacher, said he considered
himself Bush's strongest opposition.
The GOP primary, he said, has come "pretty
close" to ending now that he is out and Bush al
most certainly is in. Both men believe Bush had
a clear shot at the nomination, he said.
"There may be somebody, fringe-type, out
there, but I think most of the serious candi
dates have folded up their tents," he said.
Mosbacher, 42, said Bush seemed relieved
with the news he would riofxun. m
He also said he would support Bush in the
race, and he expects a formal announcement
from Bush after the baseball season.
