Watching "Heart and Souls" is a once in a
lifetime experience. It gives you a good excuse
to hysterically laugh and cry at the same time.
The universal theme of the movie is about
taking time to appreciate life while you have
the chance. "Heart and Souls" takes this
theme and wraps it around in a whimsical,
lighthearted way in some parts and then un
ravels to its deeper meaning in others.
The way the story starts is through very
short, choppy segments set in the 1960s reveal
ing the lives of four very distinctive people.
These four, played by Kyra Sedgwick, Charles
Grodin, Tom Sizemore and Alfre Woodard all
end up on a bus which crashes and kills them.
The only catch is, they're not totally dead
yet. They're invisible spirits. But to Thomas
Reilly (Robert Downey, Jr.) they're not invisi
ble. He can hear and see them so well, his par
ents think he needs psychiatric help.
It is through Thomas that many fascinating
things happen to these four spunky spirits.
The four "ghosts" consist of Harrison
(Grodin) — a very shy talented singer. Penny
(Woodard) — a caring mother, Milo (Size
more) — a macho swinging single and Julia
(Sedgwick) — a sweet young girl who never
gets the chance to live the long life she al
ways hoped for.
Each character has his own identity and this
adds sweetness to the sad parts of the movie.
All four of the ghostly characters have a
remarkable talent of making acting like a
spirit seem eeisy.
But Downey and Sedgwick definitely stand
out among the rest. When their characters re
veal their true feelings, it's these two who
make the tears flow.
Julia is the open-minded spirit who wants
everyone to be happy before they die. While
Thomas is the alive one, he transforms from an
egotistical uncaring guy to a sensitive man in
love with his girlfriend (Elisabeth Shue).
Think of this movie as "Ghost" meets
"Prelude to a Kiss."
Though some parts of the film are a tad
corny, the silly scenes make sense in the end.
For every inch of laughter "Heart and Souls"
brings, an extra 12 seconds of joyous tears is
sure to follow.
Robert Downey, )r. stars as Thomas Reilly,
a reluctant mortal who is destined to help
four lost souls in "Heart and Souls."
