Rockets bought by
Florida businessman
HOUSTON (AP) - Florida busi
nessman Les Alexander on Friday
completed his $85 million purchase of
the Houston Rockets and announced
he already had a "major trade" in the
works.
Alexander, who has promised to
take a hands-on approach to running
the NBA team, called the deal "signifi
cant" but declined to give more details.
"Right now we know and the oth
er team hasn't completed it yet, but it
will probably be completed in the
next day or two and we'll announce
it” he said. 'T think it's significant."
Alexander began his effort to pur
chase the Rockets three months ago,
but limited partners Tilman Fertitta
and Gary Bradley announced they
would match his $81 million offer
and buy the team themselves.
Crow, Baugh enter
SWC Hall of Fame
DALLAS (AP) — Sam Baugh jokes
that if he were entering college today,
he would be swinging a golf club
rather than throwing a football.
But when the Southwest Confer
ence quarterback legend reminisces
about his days as Texas Christian’s
"Slingin' Sammy/' it's obvious his
heart is with a pigskin, not a nine-
iron.
Baugh was one of six former con
ference players, including Texas A&M
running back John David Crow, in
ducted Friday into the first class of the
Southwest Conference Hall of Honor.
Also selected were Texas running
back Earl Campbell, TCU quarterback
Davey O'Brien, SMU running back
Doak Walker, and Houston quarter
back Andre Ware. All except Baugh
won the Heisman Trophy.

Freshman quarterback gives
recovering team new mobility
Southern
Methodist Uni
versity is con
tinuing its rise
from the grave
dug in 1985 when the NCAA levied the death
penalty against their football program.
Under the leadership of Tom Rossley the
Mustangs shocked many skeptics last season
by compiling a 5-6 record - 2-5 in the South
west Conference, Rossley's three-year record
at SMU is 6-16, 2-13 in the SWC.
"The biggest turn around for the players
was their attitude," Rossley said. "It was such
a different attitude from four years ago."
When SMU returned from the death penalty
From Staff and Wire Reports
in 1989, the team was composed of 74 fresh
men. This season, the Mustangs will boast a
lineup consisting of mostly upperclassmen, but
the offense will be led by a red shirt freshman.
Ramon Flanigan, the 6-1,170 lb. quarterback
from Wichita Falls, will take over the Mus
tangs' reins.
Rossley said the offense will receive an
added dimension with a new quarterback.
"We'll be faster and have more big play po
tential on offense," he said. "Having a mobile
quarterback for the first time will also help us."
Though the offense might gain more mobility
this season, they will have to look for more im
provement with almost a complete new

Price wins St. Jude Classic
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Nick Price, already the
leading money-winner on the PGA Tour this year,
won his fourth tournament of the year Sunday
when his final-round 66 gave him a three-shot vic
tory in the $1.1 million Federal Express-St. Jude
Classic.
It was Price's third victory in as many tour
events as he won the Greater Hartford Open and
Western Open on consecutive weekends in late
June and early July. He also won the Tournament
Players Championship in March. No other golfer
has more than two tour wins this year.
"I'm just playing well. I'm hitting the fairway.
I'm hitting the ball on the green and I'm making
putts. There's not much more to say than that,”
Price said after finishing with an 18-under-par 266
total after four trips around the 7,006-yard TPC
course at Southwind.
Jeff Maggert and Rich Fehr finished at 269, one
shot better than Fuzzy Zoeller, who began the final
round tied for the lead with Price but faded to a 70.
Price managed to win yet again — and take the
winner's check of $198,000 — despite being on
edge throughout the tournament. His wife Sue is
at home in Orlando, Fla., about to deliver their sec
ond child.
He said when the tournament began Thursday
and then said again Saturday, when he moved into
a first-place tie with Zoeller, that he would leave if
his wife went into labor.
Price's only problem on the course Sunday
came when he double-bogeyed the par-3, 231-yard
14th hole after hitting his tee shot in the water. He
was leading by four strokes at the time and said
the mistake may have resulted from overconfi
dence. Instead of playing it safe to avoid the water.
Price went straight for the flag.
"When you're hitting the ball well, and I'd been
knocking the flags down all day, the hardest thing
to do is aim away from the pin," he said.
Troubled Frogs
still rebuilding
ailing program
From Staff and Wire Reports
The TCU football program is
still rebuilding under second-
year coach Pat Sullivan, who
compiled a lackluster 2-8-1 record in '92.
Sullivan's offensive philosophy is drastically different
from the run-and-shoot style of his predecessor, Jim Wacker.
The transition to a balanced pro-style offense was difficult for
players, a problem that was apparent during the first half of
the '92 season. But TCU made progress in the second half of
the season, defeating the University of Texas 23-14 for the
first time in 25 years.
The offense has only four offensive starters returning this
year. One of those returning is sophomore quarterback Max
Knake, who made various attempts at the starting role as a
freshman and is considered the starter for now.
But apparently his starting spot isn't a lock. Sullivan has
made comments that indicate the position is still in the air.
"It's critical we resolve our quarterback situation," he said.
"We not only have to have production from that position, but
leadership as well."
Derrick Cullers is another name to watch for. As a backup
running back last year, Cullors had only 82 carries but aver
aged 5.4 per carry and returned a kickoff 97 yards for a
touchdown.
The biggest concern on offense is the line. Three starters
gone and the offensive line coach, Pete Hoener, is counting
on three junior college transfers to step up and fill in the
holes.
