Indian classical music takes center stage
tonight in College Station.
The Society for the Promotion of Indian Clas-
sicat Music and Culture amongst Youth (SPIC-
MACAY) will present at 7:30 p.m a Hindustani
vocal concert by Pandit Jasraj at 201 MSC.
"Listening to Pandit Jasraj sing, is an intense
emotional experience," said S. Padmanabhan,
the President of the Texas A&M SPIC-MACAY
chapter. "You do not have to be familiar with
the theory of Hindustani music in order to ap
preciate Pandit. You can feel the music as you
listen to him and you will be swept away into
the world that he weaves for you."
Jasraj is one of the foremost vocalists in the
Hindustani or North Style of Indian classical
music; Noted for his ability to sing in a wide vo
cal range, Jasraj's talent for creativity in elabo
rating rare ragas (combinations of notes) has
made him extremely popular with the classical
music loving audiences. He has performed the
world -wide and is a Padma Bhushan award-
winner, one of India's highest civilian honors.
India has two forms of classical music-the
North Indian or Hindustani and the South Indi
an or Carnatic styles. The distinctive feature of
Hindustani music is the freedom given to the
artist to elaborate a particular raga.
Commenting on the mission of SPIC-
MACAY, V. Rajan, the treasurer of the organiza
tion* said, "Our effort is directed toward sharing
the diverse cultural tradition of India with the
student population and the Brazos community."

Crawl charms the family with
supposed innate goodness — a
oodness hard to discern from the
requent sexual innuendoes and
"Pauly lingo." The lack of origi
nality became even worse when
Crawl put on the denim overalls
and white cowboy hat and at
tempted the "easy" everyday
chores of a farmer.
Of course, the farm-hands try
to discourage the city sticker with
numerous pranks and intimidat
ing body language.
But after a disastrous day of
bailing hay and bouts with ma
nure, Crawl outsmarts them by
putting on his rollerblades and
breezing through a day's work.
The resourceful tactics coming
from Pauly Shore were a little
hard to swallow.
Nausea set in as Grandpa (Ma
son Adams) and the rest of the
farm folks began adopting the
Pauly lingo.
"Cool buuudddyyy" doesn't
sound any funnier with a North
Dakota accent than it does coming
from Pauly Shore.
