Page 4 The Battalion Monday, June 21 * Millen to replace recovering Aikman IRVING — With Troy Aikman unavailable for between six and 12 weeks following back surgery, newly acquired backup Hugh Millen is the starting quarterback for the Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. Despite all the sacks he suf fered with the New England Pa triots, Millen has never been un der this much pressure. Millen moved to the top of the depth chart Saturday when Super Bowl MVP Aikman underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his lower back. Doctors said his rehabilitation may extend into the first couple of weeks of the season. The Cowboys lost their only successful backup quarterback when Steve Beuerlein became an unrestricted free agent this off season and signed with the Phoenix Cardinals. That forced Dallas to shop around and on April 26 they swapped a middle-round 1994 draft choice to the Patriots for Millen. Peugeot takes top three at LeMans ing sun. Brabham and teammates Christophe Bouchut and Eric Helary of France, went 375 laps over the 8.5-mile course, a total distance of 3,187 miles. The 1-2-3 finish by Peugeot was a resounding victory for the French automaker, which also edged Toyota in last year's Le Mans race. This year, Toyota contended again until its powerhouse racers were plagued by mishaps and structural problems. A Toyota TS010 did manage to finish fourth. LE MANS, France (AP) - De fending champion Peugeot held off a challenge by Toyota and swept the top three places in the 24-hour Le Mans endurance race Sunday. A long layoff from an injury, a big-name hunter with a booming serve, and a pristine, fast grass Centre Court that favors serve- and-volleyers all could conspire to give Agassi an unwanted spot in the record books. But at least he plans to return to Centre Court at 2 p.m., the ap pointed hour for every men's champion to come back for the start of play 50 weeks after his last triumph here. Top-ranked Pete Sampras, who would have been a favorite here if not for a suddenly sore shoulder, isn't so sure he'll make it to Wimbledon even after being granted a day's delay for his first match against Australian Neil Berwick. Dallas Stars make three more deals DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars continued their restructur ing Sunday, adding two defense- men and swapping a forward for a draft pick in three separate deals. The Stars, who have the ninth overall pick in Saturday's NHL draft, added a sixth-round selec tion by dealing Gaetan Duchesne to San Jose. Dallas also gave up future considerations to acquire Cord Murphy from Boston and Paul Cavallini from Washington. Murphy, 26, had five goals and 12 assists in 49 games for Boston last year. He came up with Philadelphia in 1988-89 and joined the Bruins in 1991-92. Cavallini, 27, began last with St. Louis but spent me the season with Washingto: 82 games overall last year,k jht goals and 17 points. eigr Green dethrone Sheehan at IPS ROCHESTER, N.Y. Janzen was the first to hit despite Stewart being farther away on the green. Janzen flipped his shot to the left of the flag and let it run down and into the hole for the birdie that put him two in front. No great celebration followed from Janzen, just a simple thrust sky ward of his left arm. "I was just trying to land it a foot or so on the green and I land ed it right where I thought I had to land it," he said. "And the thing just started breaking toward the hole and I could see it going in." The chip marked the second time in three we^eks in which Stewart had been beaten by a title- depriving shot — a 72nd hole sand shot by Azinger at The Memorial. This time the stakes were high er. And this time the shot will take its place in golf history. "A very poignant memory," said Tom Watsop,'who holed just such a chip from behind the 17th green at Pebble Beach in winning the 1982 U.S. Open. After both parred the 17th, the par-5 18th became Stewart's only hope, and an eagle was needed. Janzen's drive to the right rough forced him to lay up short of the creek in two, while Stew art's long tee shot set up an iron into the green. But he just missed carrying the bank of the front bunker and the ball dropped back into the sand. It is expected to be adopted by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "Human rights is in itself an important issue, but it is for each IOC member to take their own de cision," Garrard said. "A govern ment cannot instruct someone to vote when that person is indepen dent from the government." The view was echoed by Anita DeFrantz, the sole American on the 93-member IOC. "Every IOC member, including me, has the right to make his or her own decision," said DeFrantz, a former Olympic rower who marched against the 1980 boycott. "It's kind of them to offer their thoughts to me. I'll make my own decision." Dick Pound, a senior IOC offi cial from Canada, said, "I think it is an unfortunate resolution to be circulated at this time ... I hope that more mature congressional thought will be addressed to it and it will not go any further." The IOC will select the host city during a secret ballot in Monte Carlo on Sept. 23. In addi tion to Beijing and Sydney, the candidates are Berlin; Brasilia, Brazil; Istanbul, Turkey, and Man chester, England. The Chinese Olympic Commit tee on Friday described the House resolution as "wanton interfer ence with the just right of the Chi nese people" and said it "tram ples upon Olympic principles."
